Default Who out there snipe hunts?

I know I'm going to get the stories of brown bags and flashlights, but I'm talking the real thing here

I have always enjoyed snipe hunting and had one of the better hunts on Sunday at my hunting club. Two of us hunting got limits in about 1.5 hours  . My dog just loves to flush and retrieve those long-billed guys. What was most impressive was the number of birds...we saw flocks of 10 to 25 snipe flying around our pastures. We would shoot one, the dog would run out to get it and flush 2 or 3 birds. What a great time!!

Has anyone seen a lot of snipe lately? Does anyone hunt for them?

I will tell you if you think you a good wing shot, try getting a limit of birds and see how many shells it take you  It will humble you sometimes.

Good wing shooting to all.

I used to hunt them while in college at U of O. There were plenty of them around Eugene back in the 60's. (I know, I'm old!) My question to you. What is the weekly limit on snipe, or is there one?

I hunted them 30 years ago. They would flush and fly in a circle and return to where they flushed. Kind of lame. Much better shooting than rails though. I still think rails walk south when they migrate.

The limit is 8 per day.

Blake, there's really no challenge?? I will agree some birds are easier than others but their twisting and turning flights are fun. We hunt in pretty open pastures and they flush out a ways. If you jump them in rush or cattails they hold a lot better.

My favorite way to cook them is just like dove breasts. I breast them out and put one or two canned jalapeno on the meat and roll a piece of bacon around the whole thing and stick with a toothpick. Throw them on the grill and cook only until the bacon is brown. You want them med-rare or they're over done. They are really good that way!

We duck hunt on a pasture that has cattle in it and the snipe will follow around the cows if you know what I mean . There's nothing more to it than walking out there and jumping them. Good target practice....yes But compared to the excitement and challenge of duck hunting they don't even come close.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">That would explain why I usually see bunches of them along the tideflats on the upper T-Bay.

A friend of mine, during a slow hunt day out on Sauvies, shot a bunch of what he thought were snipe and took them back to the check station.
Turned out they were dowitchers. Ooops!

Out duck hunting this year I am seeing more and larger flocks than ever and they drive the dog nuts!

On a slow day I have been known to shoot one or two just so the dog can get some satisfaction...

That was the first migratory fowl my father let me shoot with my lever action(single) 20ga! I have read many articles of the most difficult shot gunning birds and snipe have came in second or first to the woodcock of surveys including snipe.

I have spent many hours walking the flats chasing these difficult little birds. I don't know what drakeblake is shooting maybe Robins, maybe not. But I can guarantee you the window of opportunity to harvest a snipe is much smaller than that of most if not all winged birds.

Perhaps Rauly should set up an I-fish hunt for them. I'd be in.

As for the notice in population increase. I would have to agree. I am seeing more and more.

I don’t appreciate being called a Robin killer even if it is tongue and cheek. To each his own I guess. Good luck hunting this year.
