Desolation Elk

Dad has drawn a cow tag (Desolation) for the middle of November and only has one weekend of scouting under his belt. I'm curios to see if anyone saw many animals on the first seasons. Not looking for specifics but general areas or any advide would be greatly appreciated.

We have found shed horns as far upstream as Crane Cr. That tells me that the elk will winter that high and there should be elk anywhere downstream from there to Dale during Thanksgiving. Lots of country---Good luck.

Proably one of the hardest hunts I have been on, The elk are getting really spooky by then.

We had 5 hair tags, hunted the whole unit really hard, Saw one hanging near Dale and one hanging at the Freemont Cabins. Nothing but old sign. Dont know where you will be but try road number 19 our of Granit. Saw a ton of old sign
(4-10 days old) but nothing new. Locals say the elk have migrated out early. We had to hunt in very warm weather. Good luck.

I would try hunting the 1010 road circle out of Dale off of the 10 road. Hunt around the lookout and Northern edges. You shouldn't have to much trouble finding a cow. Good luck.

I would go to the east side of the unit, North of Granite, work the reprod areas. If no good there, try to the west into the Wilderness area. That has been successful for me.
