poaching on KATU tuesday nite
Grant McComie will do another poaching piece on KATU news tuesday night, this one is about big game rather then the snagging piece he did last week.

Re: poaching on KATU tuesday nite
I'll be watching, nothing is more entertaining than watching poachers get snagged. Maybe if the OSP bonked the keepers, it would be less of a problem  .

Thanks Dan
That's pretty sad. Hunters safety "teacher" and has two kids with him and he's doing that.
At the sportsman's show the ODFW had some videos playing of some of there bust like that. Some of them people are just so stupid its funny.

Re: poaching on KATU tuesday nite
A buddy and I were driving into an area in the coast range a few years ago. I had a buck tag and he had a doe tag. We saw a nice buck and a doe in a clearcut in our headlights as we rounded a corner. We backed up and looked again, and they didn't move. Oh well just stupid I guess. So we continued to back up the road just out of sight of the "deer". The plan was to wait for light and walk in. So there we are, drinking coffee, maybe 15 minutes go by and a trooper with flashlight raps on my window and scares the crap out me. I spilled hot coffee right in my lap. I thought I was going to jump out my skin!! I rolled down my window and he asked us what we were doing and we said we were waiting for it to get light so we could walk in kill the deer just up around the corner. He checked our licences and tags and then informs us that they were decoys and we need to move on. Those things are very realistic, the one I saw had glowing eyes and a remote control flicking tail.

Re: poaching on KATU tuesday nite
I hate when they call Pochers - Hunters. We've been down that road, but!
I've talked to several enforcement officials about the decoys that they use and suggested that they install a range gong inside the vital areas so when there is a hit there is a nice loud audible - "KLANG" would go over well in the video at court.

Re: poaching on KATU tuesday nite
Absolutely unbelievable. I think was makes me most nervous about this is that they were able to get this on tape and it didn't look like it took that long to find someone willing to take the bait. Could you imagine if they ran these stings all over the place during the deer season? How many more poachers would be caught? I realize that OSP is pretty short handed, but it would be nice to see more of this going on to deter poaching.

Re: poaching on KATU tuesday nite
I saw the segment last night, The guy they busted, he was a hunting safety instructor (do as I say, not as I do )
the guy backs up for a better look, then drives up closer to get a real close shot. The 2 little kids sitting in the truck were probably afraid dad was going to jail when the police swooped in :depressed: :depressed: :depressed:
We need more officers and dummy deer during hunting season to take the night hunters out.
I would love to spot scruffy the fake deer, jump out of the truck, grab the decoys head off the body and throw it in the back of the truck and take off real fast like. I would be laughing so hard when they swooped in on me, it might be worth the tongue lashing I would get.
We will be citing you for interfering with a police operation  excessive speed on a dirt road  broken tailight, head lights out of adjustment, etc.....

Re: poaching on KATU tuesday nite
They ought to dress him up as scruffy and make him stand next to the road for a night. Live or die I bet it would put an end to his poaching!!

Re: poaching on KATU tuesday nite
Unfortunately I work in the city and have no game enforcement opportunities, but I sure would like to! If OSP put out an open call to all Oregon Officers volunteers to be trained in game enforcement and do some kind of rotatinoal assignment to help OSP I'd be all over that chance! Of course my department would throw a fit about TDY-ing officers out, but maybe if the state applied some pressure..............
Maybe I'll send a letter to my rep floating the idea. It's time Oregon got serious about enforcing game laws and protecting OUR resources!

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">I got to be the cameraman on an OSP decoy setup two years ago. We set up the decoys about an hour before first light. Of the first 6 carloads of hunters, 5 of them stopped and shot. One guy ran through a full magazine, reloaded and ran 'em all off again. Sadly, there is no shortage of "hunters" who will turn poacher at first opportunity.

Re: poaching on KATU tuesday nite
Maybe some of the big game clubs(RMEF, Oregon Mule Deer, etc) could help sponser a few more of these operations.

as a hunter ed. instructor, I find it VERY disappointing that we have this type of character in our ranks.

Chummer, I second the motion.
I'll bet he isn't in the ranks much longer.

Re: poaching on KATU tuesday nite
I just wish they would focus even more on nightime and out-of-season hunting, rather than harrassing hunters who have purchased tags. It is illegal to aim a weapon from a vehicle while a big game season is in place, but it is perfectly legal when no big game season is going on. Neither should be legal, but why not attempt to catch out of season hunters. I think as soon as the big game seasons are over, they proably focus their attention to waterfowl and fiahing seasons. That would be the perfect time to patrol the woods.

Re: poaching on KATU tuesday nite
Wow...that's a pretty crazy story! Anyone who shoots at a deer during dark hours needs to be taught a lesson, but for a hunter safety instructor who TEACHES this stuff, that's just wrong on so many levels This kind of stuff aggravates me to no end when I start thinking about it

Re: poaching on KATU tuesday nite
Isn't there a program that allows people that are trained to operate these decoy and take photos of the perp's vehicles? I remember seeing a retired guy on the news last year or so, doing just that and turning the photos into the OSP? He wasn't a cop, just a guy with lots of time...
I would love to be on one of these stings, what a laugh.
