Default My boy does good w/story

Here is a picture of my son Troy's big coastal blacktail he bagged today near his hometown of Alsea.

Here is his story
I was supposed to meet a friend after church at my house so we could go hunting together, but when I got home...he wasn't there. So I got dressed and headed out about 1:30 to the area we were supposed to hunt. I found his car at the trail that leads into the middle of the unit we would start our hunt in, so I went to the gate farther up and walked in hoping to intersect
him as he crossed thru the unit. Now he had shot at two big bucks there the weekend before and missed both times, but for whatever reason, I wasn't thinking about this. I had my mind set on a nice, big bodied forked horn, I just wanted to put some meat in the freezer for my family. As I came over the first hill into the unit I quickly realized that the wind wasn't doing me any favors as it basically blew in from all different directions. The unit is a small butte that was logged about 4 years ago, but its behind a
locked gate thats not real popular. As you walk out onto the first bench that looks across most of the unit, you'd almost expect to see
something...except for this day.( I didn't even see my hunting partner)
Discouraged by this (since I thought that for sure a dumb forked horn would be standing around waiting for me to just walk in and shoot him) I descided to walk thru the unit anyway and quickly get to the other side were the road there would take me to a more remote newer unit, and supposedly my friend. Half way thru I heard his car drive off...it's one of those Hondas with the
loud exhaust. Now I was seriously contemplating turning around and heading to his house to see whats up. I took another good look around with my binoculars...again nothing and still the wind was not helping. Finally I descided that this was my last chance for success this year and I needed to turn something up. Hoping that the wind was better at the other unit I put my head down and pretty much walked straight ahead thru the unit and out to the road on the otherside. As I reached the road I almost turned left in
the direction of the units when I remembered that there was a little open pocket in some older reprod to my right just off the road. Its really easy to miss especially since a big old tree with a wide, low crown blocks your view of it. So I peeked around the tree and much to my surprise...a doe was standing there with her rear to me. She was about 50 yards away
and good size, infact she was so big that I had to take a look at her thru my scope...which was covered with a VERY loud shower cap to keep the rain off the lenses (I can't find my lens covers) and ofcourse she hears this and looks up at me from over her shoulder. So not wanting to waste
anytime on a stupid doe I almost turned around and walked off, but I came to my senses and convinced myself that where there are does this time of year there must be a buck around somewhere. So I peeked back around the tree and
sure enough she was still standing there, hardly looking alarmed, her tail was down, but her ears were pinned back somewhat. So I stepped back behind the tree to make a game plan...I figured that it might be possible to try to somehow convince her that I wasn't dangerous ( to her maybe) and shoo her off so I could sneak in there and have a look around. By now a good three
minutes or so have gone by, and again I peeked out from behind the tree, and
there she was, still standing there as if she was just waiting for me to ask her nicely to leave, so this time I took a couple more steps out into the open thinking I might spot another doe or better yet, a forked horn that I had my mind set on. Thats when I spotted this huge set of antlers just to her right, instanly I ducked back behind the tree, regathered myself and peeked back out, this time coming out fully into the open with my gun at my shoulder. But I didn't shoot...I couldn't even see out of my scope I was
shaking so hard, so slowly, I lowered my gun, took a deep breath...and still, they just stood there...raised my gun aimed for the chest and let it rip. He went 25 yards and fell over dead. As I ran over to him, a forked horn jumped up and took off. By 2:15 it was over.

Nice moose rack! That thing looks nearly palmated!?!

That's a wicked set of 3 points off the back fork. I don't think I have ever seen one do that. Looks pretty symmetrical too!

Congrats to your son!

Excellent coast blacktail. I especially like the dark-stain color of the antlers.

Yeah Troy is going to get the head mounted. I guess the antlers are pretty unusual for a blacktail.

That's a nice, nice buck! I wonder what he will score? He looks pretty symmetrical and good mass in the beams. Keep us in mind and tell us when he gets it scored.

He IS going to score it, isn't he?

I wouldn't even mind hearing the story (hint, hint).

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">I'm not a scoring expert, but I think the scoring systems put a big emphasis on the depth of the forks. Unfortunately, that looks like the one thing that brute's missing. The triple forked rear tines might actually hurt the score, too, if it makes it count as non-typical. Boone & Crockett doesn't classify non-typical blacktails if I remember right. I'll bet the score will still come out high, & the uninqueness definitely puts it the once-in-a-lifetime trophy class for most hunters. It's too bad the scoring systems can't take those intangibles into account.

Good story! Isn't that what it's all about - staying with it, watching the wind, knowing the country, and for sure, taking that last look around. Good on ya for taking the time to breath and settle down some before you shot. Like they say, if your heart doesn't go ballistic, you might as well stay home and watch football.

Nice buck! Good hunt!
