Default Calling coast elk experts

Having not draw my first choice elk tag this year, I will be hunting the south coastal mountains this year, first season. I have a pretty good understanding of how to hunt Eastern Oregon and what things to look for and to avoid, environment and weather factors in searching for the elk this time of year.

My question to you coast elk veterans is this: Since cold and snow are not factors, water is everywhere and good forage (as opposed to dried up grass and such)is easily found, what are several of the key factors to look for in trying to guess where the elk are?

I know, obviously, look over the clear cuts, but is there some way of being more directed in my efforts and less random chance? I am prepared to hike as far off the roads as the brush and jungle will allow, but how will I know if I'm walking (or crawling as likely) in a productive area?

I already have three large areas in mind to hunt that I checked out during deer season. I know for fact that each area has at least one herd. Now, what factors do I look for to help narrow my search in these large geographical areas?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Hit the clearcuts where there's elk at first light, don't expect to hit many areas during our hunt. Find a herd and stay on them religiously. Too many people drive the logging roads from spot to spot. If you're familiar with the spot you'll be hunting basically camp on it and don't leave until you push the herd out of it. If they aren't there at first light head to the timber where they'll most likely be bedding. I would avoid the reaprod unless you plan on driving the elk to someone or you can get a shot on the opposite hill. One major thing to do also is park your rig a good 1/4 mile from any area you want to hunt and make it obvious you're on that road. Multiple vehicles are better. That way not too many people will drive down them knowing more than one person is there. Otherwise, they'll drive right out to the landing, open and shut the doors and make all kinds of racket. Good luck.

Another thing to look for is tank trapped or gated roads, there are only a small portion of elk hunters on this side of the mountain who dont road hunt. It shouldnt be that tough to find closed roads to hike in on. Weve had pretty good luck behind closed gates bowhunting, I cant see where it would be that much different. The best of luck to you!!!!!

After looking over the open areas at first light, find some reprod, the kinda think and nasty kind, and watch the openings. Its a waiting game, but you can usually spot critters walking through the openings in the prod. Big timber is always good, especially along the cuts. Good luck.
