Default My First Branch Antlered Rocky Mountain Elk (pic)

Hunted first season in the Northside unit. Although I've harvested a branch Roosevelt, I hadn't yet tagged a branch antlered Rocky Mountain elk. I've killed 2 spikes, and 2 cows so was really holding out for a branch bull. Had a hair tag and got this bull on Saturday after passing up several cows (maybe 150) and three smaller bulls. My hunting partners killed 3 bigger bulls out of the same herd before it got to the ridge I was on. This little 5x6 was the biggest bull left in the herd. Shot him 6 times with my .300 Win with 165 grain partitions - twice behind the shoulder, once at 200 yards and once at 50 yards as he ran towards me. Then 4 neck shots from about 80 yards until he tipped over. I'm sure the first 2 shots would have killed him, but I always keep shooting elk until I see hooves sticking up in the air. Our party of 12 ended up with 9 elk, 7 branch bulls, a forky and a cow. Only one real decent bull taken - an estimated 300-310 6x6.

I would call that a real decent bull, but that's just me! Congrats on a good, successful hunt to all in your party!

Congratulations.

Sounds like a great trip, congratulations. Would you recommend the first season for any elk or the second bull only season? My brother and I have been putting in for this unit and should have the preference points for next year.

There is a LOP tag for either sex that has the same hunt days as the first season bull only tag. You must be listed on the landowners permission form to get this hunt.

That was smart to tell everyone where you hunted..........I don't understand this?

What private land hunt did you draw?

Yes, this is a LOP tag - either sex is permitted. I hunt the Vaughn Ranch owned by Jack Johns - 28,000 acres located right outside of Fox. My 2 buddies who hunted the National Forest bordering the ranch both got bulls.

Thehunter - sharing a hunting unit in Eastern Oregon isn't going to diminish yours or anyone else's chances of getting a tag - that's what this hunting board is for.

Thanks to all who responded. It's been a week now and I'm just starting to come down from the rush! Good luck to all of you guys who will be hunting over on this side of the mountains!
