Default Hunting Reports Week 11/1 - 11/7

Cold weather and the animals should be moving and starting to rut. Lets hear it.

Hunted L&C this weekend.
Tides were just about perfect (moderate high tide a couple hours after shooting light). Conditions were also just about perfect (cold, with a stiff east wind).

We bagged 12 ducks for two guys Sat., and 14 today. Mix of mallards, teal, and widgeon.

Last weekend the area was just about empty of ducks; this weekend it was just full of birds. Also, the bluebills have arrived in large numbers.

Shot a hen blue-winged teal today. First one ever for me. It was a real head-scratcher until I got it home and pulled out the bird i.d. book.

Tough day for me personally. Figured from the forecasts we would have snow on the ground, but alas not much. Hunted the upper Trask drainage hard, spent 4 hours hiking, and didn't see a thing. Heard 4 shots so apparently others did. I didn't see a deer until I was almost back to Banks on a farmers field.

Going out again tomorrow on Tuesday. Hopefully I can find something.

We saw snow in the foothills, so Reeltrouble bought an elk tag and we headed for high ground by my cabin! Decided not to go to the snow, saw no elk, but one grouse and a doe! Looks like few have been shot in the marble area based on pictures at the cougar store, deer was sure slow up there though!

Killed a 4X3 Blacktail on Saturday morning, saw two other bucks I could not get a shot at. Buck was chasing two doe's through a clearing.

We picked up 12 geese on Sunday. All pigs (westerns). Got my first triple with one bird being banded.

Rauly, with your job change are you going to be able to make it South. I hate to see a promise go to waste.

Rauly, help me out a little. What would work best for you and Get Bit in terms of which day to hunt and early or late season. Skein, are you listening. What works for you? Trying to make sure we have a good hunt by reducing hunting presure on them before we get there (which includes me). I would like to see the herd built up to good numbers for our shot. The birds have come and gone on my fields. It didn't help that the farmer plowed under the corn.

Limits of ducks are becoming the norm early this year for my buddies and I. The past two hunt days at Sauvie Island have been outstanding. The first day we hunted the Eastside, the next was Westside, both same results. The northerns are definitely here. The morning flight was incredible again. Looks like this is going to be a great year for ducks.

Me and a buddy went out Saturday. We both had doe tags and he had a buck tag also. He shot a nice forky around 11am. Haven't been able to get a doe yet but have a few more days.

Hunted all last week in the Fossil Unit with my hunting buddy, his son (he came along to be the mule) and a friend of ours from Washington. My buddy got a spike opening morning which took us the rest of the day to pack out since we were in about three miles. Got back to camp at dark and our friend from Washington had killed a 6x7, which was packed out the next day. I spent the rest of the season looking but never did find a bull, some years are like that. Had a wonderful time despite the high winds and cold temps,I'm already looking forward to next year.

Got out deer hunting Saturday & Sunday. I went to the area I got my bear two weeks ago did a lot of still-hunting on game trails & walking gated roads (I'm not too familiar with the area & wanted to cover a good deal of ground.) On Satuday I saw a fork about 25 yards away, but didn't have my rifle ready, and later spotted a doe bedded down in the middle of a clearing 50 yards off the road. Sunday, I jumped a deer out of a blackberry patch first thing in the morning. A couple of crashes in the brush, a flash of gray & it was gone. Didn't see any antlers, but didn't get a good look either. The rest of the day I didn't see much until I punched my tag on a fork-x-spike at 4:30. Detailed story & pics to come...

Got my first limit on Saturday! Sauvie Island! Sunday was almost as good we split a limit between two of us. Lots of birds flying during the snow, but the wind shifted and blew them out of our flight pattern. Looks like this could be the year!

I bagged a nice little forked horn just out of Willamina on Staturday. 86 LBS hanging weight.

Still have a doe tag to fill so I'll be out this evening.

Lots of Fat on this little buck.

Hope he's tasty!

I should probably quit goose hunting now while I'm ahead. No birds all morning except the big bad dark kind, passed on of course. In the afternoon bigger flights were moving around. Then was able to pull some over calling,3 shots,3 birds down.My first triple on geese  .Even Rilla(faithful BLF hunting companion) was surprised.Unfortunately my regular stellar shooting ability kicked in and I didn't finish the limit with only 2 more opportunities.Seems the birds are starting to spread out more.Didn't see any where near as many as a couple of weeks ago.

My son and I finished the deer season with 2 spikes on our doe tags and 1 fork. 3 deer out of 4 tags. All taken in the Saddle Mt. unit Now looking forward to second season elk in the same area.

Went Elk hunting in the Fossil unit (10/31-11/2). We had 'any elk' tags. We didn't see any Elk or sign for that matter. It was really cold, we may have been too high. We talked to some locals, and I guess they were having much better luck on the private ranches that were at lower elevations. We did see hundreds of deer, mostly does, and about 10 bucks in the 3 days we were there. Too bad it wasn't buck season. My hunting season is over (rifle). I didn't get any animals this year, but I think that I learned a lot. Maybe next year. Good luck.

Dave,
You're probably right.
I checked in a couple of my bird books and both stated that hen cinnamon and bluewing teal can't be distinguished in the field.

Oh well, if that's the case then it's my first cinnamon teal!

My dad and I went Tuesday and Wednesday. We hunt a private tree farm in the Trask. Tuesday we got a nice-bodied fork. Wed we got a nice 2x3 and a doe. All in all, a great couple of days and a truck full of venison. Racks weren't all that impressive, but meat is meat and we get less picky toward the end of the season.

Upland on the mid-coast has been fair. Scouting elk I saw 2 grouse, 2 coveys of quail and got one bird last night. This morning it was 3 grouse and one covey of quail. Came home with one grouse and two quail. Had a nice 3x4 blacktail standing at 20 yards yesterday. Last day of general season, the one year I don't have a western tag and here he is. Figures. My dad killed a forked horn yesterday up on the Clack.
