Default Wall Tent Stove Recomendations

Well our ancient sheapherd stove finally died during first season - so I'm looking for a replacement. Looked at a few already and like the Idaho Tent Stove. The stove will mostly be used for truck based base camps and not packed on a horse, so lite weight isn't that important. Our current tent is 14x16, but that will probably get replaced at some point as well - probably simular size.

Ok so lets hear em guys/gals what are your recommendations and why?

We use a huge, big old heavy stove. Why---because from the shed to the tailgate and tailgate to tent, once a year is no big deal. Hunt just 1 season when the temp drops below zero and you will also agree that bigger is better. Even though we had 2-6 inches on the ground last week, it was relitivly warm. I never even zipped my bag shut at night. The other plus is that you can find older non DEQ stoves in the paper for free all the time. And as a prominent portlander once said, "Free is a very good price".

Ted,
Personally I'd just weld up one from scrap steel.
You get the steel and I'll weld it for ya.

Or just check the thrifties, classified, or Nickel ads for a small used Fisher or Scrade (sp) and cut off the fixed legs and weld on pipe couplers for screw in legs. And old "earth stove" would take forever to rust out.

BTW, how'd ya do? We were done by 8am Wed. Mules loaded with meat by 12 and back 12m to camp by 4pm. We need to grab a and catch up.

We use an old heavy stovev as stated above, (very heavy) its from an old house and it will heat you out of your tent (this is a good thing in mid november in eastern oregon!
The weight is no big deal cuase it only gets used onse or twice a year.

Try this site: http://www.kwikkamp.com/octagon-stoves.cfm
I bought one of these a few years ago and have not been disappointed. Nothing like coming back to camp in several feet of snow and being warm in no time at all. We have enjoyed a nice warm tent in weather down to 5 degrees. Our only problem has been being to warm at times. They are a little spendy but worth every penny. Good luck.

Ours is also a big free standing stove from an old house. It had a glass front that we broke out and welded a steel cover over. Our tent is 16x20 and our stove heats it very well. The beauty of the big heavy stove is that is holds heat a long time.

I have a 15x21 tent and I heat it very adaquately and easily with a Cylinder Stove (that's the brand.) I have the largest one they make and it's awesome. All of the components fit inside the stove including the pipe. If it disappeared tomorrow I would just order another one. No need to shop around.

Sotz used to make kits that are bolted onto the top of 33 and 50 gallon oil drums. A little torch work needed to make the cut outs, but the stove has a draft control and burns all night when loaded up.

Another good alternative are the numerous "outfitter" stoves. Some even have hot water saddle tanks.

Go to ACE Hardware and pick up a Barrel KIT. The kit costs $40.00 and the barrell will run $5-10.00. I believe the Kit is made by Wolfenzang.

Easy to install..Need a Torch or a chop saw..

This will save a lot of cash and you will be pleased with the varience in heat.

Stickfish,
Marlin Mark brings up a good point about the pipes fitting inside the stove. Most of the packer stoves are longer to accomodate 2ft stove pipes sections inside. Most of the small home stoves are not that long. Here's a tip to maintain the pipes inside concept.... cut the stove pipes down to fit the stove. A few inches off the ends and they now fit.
Pesonally I don't think the packer stoves are for you. Too light gaged, get dented/smashed easily and they burn out the bottoms too quickly. I think a used trash burner or small Earth stove would hold up to years of service.
