Rattlin\' this morning.....
Saw a PIG of a buck yesterday that was taken up above Carlton with a very swelled neck...shot during the middle of the day, out in the open!! Yup, rut is in full swing.
So, today my wife and I headed to some private farmland down out of Scio. She has a general season tag, and I have a Willy unit "extra" hair tag. We set up in a sweet spot, at the edge of two fields, a half-dried slough, and 20+ acres of brush, and commenced to rattling. Everything was perfect...but the breeze started getting a little "puffy".
After two sets of rattle for two minutes, silence for fifteen, we heard something crunching our way through the maple leaves. It would stop, then walk closer. We shifted around a little bit, as it was coming in at an awkward angle...I covered our noise with a little more rattling, as fighting deer SHOULD make some noise. We had a low pile of brush just between us and "the noise", that we just couldn't see over or through.
The walking started again, it was obviously headed around the end of the brush pile...then it happened. The wind shifted absolutely 180 degrees...and instantly, the animal blew out the other direction!! Never saw a glimpse, but it was pretty obvious what it was.
Hope to get back into it tomorrow, and a little earlier in the morning, hoping the breeze isn't so fickle.
