Nice Buck (pics)Now with a story!
Here is a nice Blacktail Buck my brother,bob-burr, shot today in the santiam unit. Notice the unusual eye guards.

Re: Nice Buck (pics)Now with a story!
Nice Buck! Santaiam unit; Do you think that buck could possibly have some mule deer in him? My dad got a big ol nasty 4x4 up there one year that looked similar and he had some guy's tell him it was probably a cross breed.

Re: Nice Buck (pics)Now with a story!
I know they do cross breed but I think most of that is in the eastern part of the Santiam unit. This buck was taken on the western side of the unit so I think its less likely but still possible. Seeing the buck in person though it really doesnt look "muley" to me.

Re: Nice Buck (pics)Now with a story!
I hunt the NW side of the santiam unit and I know we get some of the "Benchlegs"(hybrids) up there. What area of the unit was your brother hunting, I know where we hunt it got snow yesterday and the day before. We also hunt fairly high so maybe he was hunting low. Congrats on the nice Buck, I am getting mine tomorrow!!

Re: Nice Buck (pics)Now with a story!
Ok here's the story. Feel free to put this on the Trophy page as well if you like.
Our hunt began at 1:00 in the afternoon, I decided to take off from work early and try my luck in a favorite area I hunt.
I was hunting in the Northfork section of the Santiam unit, as I was working my way through the timber between landings I had just crossed a road when I caught a flash out of the corner of my eye, as I turned to look in the direction of the flash I saw this smaller buck that I decided to pass up in hopes of a larger buck I had spotted on several different trips to this same area in the past.
It was about 2 minutes later that I once again noticed something in the timber above me and thought it was once again the smaller buck that I had jumped just moments before, this was not the case. As I casually scanned the direction of what I had saw suddenly this buck broke out and began running through the old growth, I brought up my rifle and began looking for the buck in my scope. The first thing I saw in the scope was his antlers which looked very inpressive through the scope. As I followed the buck through the timber I was scanning ahead of him as best I could to find a place I could get a clean shot off at him. He passed between 2 trees on a dead run I found my shot, the buck stumbled but kept running. Again I looked for an opening and just before he topped a small ridge I again shot. I could not tell if he went down as he had gone over the ridge after I shot. I began the slow walk up the hill and just as I crested the ridge I saw him, he had cleared the ridge and ran about 200 feet and dropped about 30 feet from a road on the oposite side of the ridge where I first spotted him. The closer I got to him the bigger he began to look to me. Getting him out was'nt hard as he had ran and dropped near the road and all I had to do was drive around and load him up.
He is hanging now and all I have to do is find a good taxidermist to do my mount. Any suggestion and or recomendations would be welcome for a good taxidermist.
Bob

Great buck! I'd have that one scored. I've seen a number of record book Blacktails, and that one is every bit as big as anything else I've seen

Re: Nice Buck (pics)Now with a story!
Well he took it in to have it mounted and the guy told him it should score around 150. Thats just a guesstimate though.

Re: Nice Buck (pics)Now with a story!
Nice Buck
I shot a buck about 10 years ago in the Santiam unit that had similar eye gaurds. Wasn't as big a buck only a 3x2 but nice tall horns. I shot a 4x5 up in the clack drainage that I am pretty sure is a benchleg. Just by looking at his horns he apears to hav a bit of muley in him.
I will be up in the santiam unit on wed for the last day of season to see if I can't find a buck.
