My Dad's rifle storage idea.
Tell me what you think please.
My Dad always stashed the bolts from his rifles in a different spot than the rifle itself. Seems like a good idea to me. Wouldn't this make the rifle of little to no value to a thief?? I realize this would not work for you household protection piece. And then there is the issue of remembering where you put the darn thing.

A tweeker will take the rifle with or without the bolt. I like to have the bolt in so that I can take care of business if need be.

Re: My Dad's rifle storage idea.
Well, my take on the idea is that, at first blush, it seems like a good idea. However, given the mentally challenged nature of most criminals, I question whether they'll even notice . . . . . It might have more validity as a safety precaution. Don

I agree with Don and Coastal. It's not that tough to get a new bolt. Cody

Re: My Dad's rifle storage idea.
It's a proven way to slow down a thiefs intentions and cost of doing business.
At least store them in a different safe.

Re: My Dad's rifle storage idea.
I have to agree that they would probably still take the rifle. A bigger problem for me would remembering where I put the Bolts to my rifles. Just read a post on 24hrcampfire about the same issue and one guy said he had been missing a bolt to a rifle for years.

A rifle for home protection? Might not be such a good idea. Might just kill a neighbor.

Re: My Dad's rifle storage idea.
All good points...
Don't think they'd notice...AGREED.
But why not make it harder for them to turn a buck.
Gun worthless on the street....AGREED.
Bolt easy replaced.... AGREED, but not to the average dope head.
It would require that they spend money to replace it,
Not gonna happen.
Besides headspacing would probably be required.
Bolt's easy misplaced.....AGREED. I've done it!
Before the safe I just stored the bolts with my ammo, which should always be stored seperately for common sense reasons.
Can't go hunting w/o the ammo, and there are the bolts on top of each's respective stack of ammo boxes.
Worked for me.

I think a good safe is a much better idea.........if you add up the replacement cost of all your valuables the safe is going to pencil out, just my 2 cents.........Ray
Might just kill a neighbor.
