Default Avoiding Stolen Property ?

After having read so many posts about stolen equipment, I'm nervous and I certainly don't want to contribute to the problem. I'm looking for a used/inexpensive kicker, but I most certainly don't want to buy anything that's been stolen. Any suggestions on how to avoid "hot" motors?

Is there a database anywhere that I can look up a serial number? Is there any sort of cooperative effort amongst the police, or do I need to call around?

Where would I find the S/N to check on a potential motor?

Thanks for any help. Regards,
Ted

Hi Empty Pockets...

You can try your local police department, sheriff's office or State Police. Be prepared with the make, model and serial number. They may take your name and phone number and call you back.

Serial numbers are often found on the vertical body below the engine cowling/cover. The serial number may be on a sticker or a glued-on metal tag. A dealer for the brand should be able to tell you where to look too.

If the police run a stolen check for you, it is prudent to write down the date, time and to whom you spoke. It is also prudent to make discreet notes about the seller, such as address, vehicle description/license, and a description of the person. I would want a signed receipt with their name, address, date, etc.. Personally, if my inner voice said I should really be asking this perosn for peronal identification, I would not purchase something from them.

if you have to ask...probably better off passing on the DEAL

or... get serial numbers first and pay a visit to your local law enforcement.

Get a bill of Sale! Pretty sure if you have one you are not an acessory to the crime. I would also get a ton of info to back-track the person your buying it from. If they only want to do minimal paperwork----Walk away, or reap the whirlwinds.

Dont buy from a toothless guy with 14 cars in his driveway and yard, and if you go to buy it at night and he is painting his cyclone fence with a flood light drive away

If it seems to good to be true it is. You use your best judgement and instincts and you won't go wrong.

The used boat motor deal will not come without a story and if the story don't seem right it is time to walk away.

Better safe than sorry.
