Re: Jeesh, check out this elk story
I have heard, Chuck only hunts public ground, does anybody know if that is true?? If so I have a ton of respect for him.

Re: Jeesh, check out this elk story
Not to take anything away from Chuck or his accomplishments, but not only is he a master bowhunter, he is also a master photographer. If you analyze any of his photos, you will find that either his hands are twice the size of his head, or he tends to get as far back from the animal as he can.
I know, I know...this is a monster bull. I'm not questioning that. I'm just clarifying some 'perpective', so to speak.
Over the years, we've even joked after taking an animal, to make sure and take a couple "Chuck Adams" photos. We've yet to master it. It's possible there is a lens that enhances perspective, I really don't know.
Chuck is the man nonetheless...

Re: Jeesh, check out this elk story
As of the pics of the new bull, he isn't showing anyone the pics of it. He's definitely being pretty secretive about it just for showing. Not sure why, I guess he has his reasons. He is the man though.

Re: Jeesh, check out this elk story
Look around on the net, there have been some HUGE bulls taken this year. I believe that Chuck's new bull will be #3!!!! I have seen picks of a 419 and a 436!!!
This bull was reportedly shot around Ellensburg

Here is another pig that was shot by a friend of a friend in Montana. Reported green score of 415
Or not. It's in a protected album. Sorry

Re: Jeesh, check out this elk story
Roy,
I've read some stories on Chuck but never about public land hunting. This may be true cause I'm not entirley sure myself, except it's really hard to imagine huge bulls growing to trophy proportions on public land.
From what I've read, Chucks all about money, hunting is his business.
It's all about location, location, location.
Speaking of which, while hunting in eastern Oregon this year I happened to met a fellow bowhunter who just returned from a successful Arizona archery elk hunt. He bagged a nice 6 point he said scored apx. 300 and his partner arrowed a really nice 6 point that scored apx. 350. He also descibed seeing many other large 6 point bulls from 300 to 400 points and heard of a few 400 plus elk that were taken. Sounds like a story for sure until I saw the video. He video taped his entire hunt, the bulls they shot and the bulls they spot lighted at night. That's right, spot lighting bulls at night. He said it's legal and all the locals do it to find locations to hunt. He video taped numerous large branch bulls at night that was truely impressive. He said they could drive the roads and actually get very close to these bulls and film them for long minutes at a time. The bulls didn't seem to mind and most kept feeding or just stood there. Oh, he also said the bull to cow ratio in this unit is like 5 bulls for every one cow. That's right, way more bulls then cows, hard to imagine.
Instead of applying for hunt tags in Oregon, I should be applying for out of state tags.
Oh, did you know that Larry Jones hunts only public lands? It's true, a person from his camera crew told me this as fact. I found that hard to believe too, except I actually do believe it.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Holy Elkosaurous Batman! Funny you mention the camera tricks. Looks like a very wide angle lense was used to me. Look at the taper on the trees from the top to the bottom. Also isn't an Elk head generally 16"? How long do you think his arrows are? Also look at the Antler shadows on the body and Chucks arm's shadow on his - they kind of look different to me.
Heck who cares - great pic of an outstanding bull

Re: Jeesh, check out this elk story
Mtn Mn. You are right, there have been a lot of awesome bulls taken this year, and their green scores certainly show that. However, once deductions have been included into the final (dry) score, watch them bump out of the top 10. The picture you posted is a great example of just that. This particular elk appears to have well over 20" of deductions. I'm not arguing that he's not an absolute monster, and a trophy of a lifetime. But when it comes to record book, simetry (sp) is everything. This elk appears to be missing that in big ways.

Re: Jeesh, check out this elk story
Sometime ya'll should read Adam's book 'Life at Full Draw.' Pretty interesting read. Lots of hunting stories, lots of sacrifices. If thats a new world record elk I'd much rather see it come from Montana than from a reservation in Arizona or NM.

Re: Jeesh, check out this elk story
I'm with you Nitro!
Many believe that the NM and AZ elk are actually hibrid, a cross between the Yellowstone elk and the now extinct Merriam's elk. The Merriam were notorious for HUGE antlers, considerably larger than the Yellowstone. Unfortunately they, along with the Eastern Elk are now gone, due specifically to habitat loss and unchecked meat hunting. :depressed:
The Tule herds almost met the same fate.
Now, if you want to see a really big elk... check this out
really big elk
