I have not hunted either, but acquaintances who live near the Steens Mountains have said some good things about the Juniper hunt.

In my opinion the Juniper hunt, which is usually held in the first week of December, would be VERY fun. Good luck with the research/planning!

My wife had the Juniper tag 7 years ago, she got a smaller 4x3 buck, There were some nice bucks taken. We saw probably 30-40 bucks and 200-300 does in a 3-4 days. I feel it is the best trophy muzzleloader hunt in the state. All of those hogs migrate across from the refuge to chase does. With some pre season scouting a 30 inch buck is a real possibility. The rut was over at the time we hunted.
Reallistically It will take probably 10 points or more. I know one guy who drew a couple years ago with 7 or 8 points. good luck.

Default Muzzle loader deer question (again)

I posted a similar note to this a couple weeks back, but got no responses, but thought I'd give it a try again.

My wife and I have built up quit a few preference points for deer hunting. I was planning on trying for a trophy hunt, probably Trout Creek Mts, and she would hunt muzzleloader in either Hart Mt. or Juniper. After reading the posts recently about the Trout Creek hunt (thanks guys!), I am really reconsidering that choice. She has enough points now that she could draw SE Metolius No. 1 (any deer, late October to early November). But to wait for Hart Mt, is about 3 years off, Juniper is probably 5. I've got a bit of research to do before I decided on my choice.

The question I would ask is whether anyone out there have hunted any of these three hunts, and what their experience has been.

I don't want to squander the points, but don't want to waste waiting for a mediocre experience.

I read the post but haven't hunted those units so I didn't reply earlier. Sorry I couldn't help more.
