Bulls locked to the death of one
Here are a couple of pics a buddy got from his sister in Alaska. I guess the story is that the bulls were fighting, got locked, and the one choked the other out. A hunter shot the live bull, and the game commission allowed him to keep the second as well. From the looks of it, the one had been dead a day or two. The hunter plans on mounting both together rather than cutting one away from the other... Something you don't see everyday.

Re: Bulls locked to the death of one
That is gonna be one gnarly taxidermy job. Whew.
I've seen lots of caribou that got locked up and died, but never elk. I wouldn't have minded tagging either one of these guys. Man!

Must've been Afognak or the other island near it. I think that's the only place Alaska has elk...and as I recall, they were sent there from Oregon...Roseys...

Re: Bulls locked to the death of one
That's what I figure too, Bill. And Afognak isn't known for big racks. Big animals, yes, but the feed on the island just doesn't (usually) make for big horns. Used to be you could get over-the-counter tags for two elk, but I don't know if that's still the deal.
Seems like I heard of elk on Admiralty Island, but can't remember for sure.
Tag-a-long, I'm curious to know where these were taken. Was it up by Kodiak (Afognak) or someplace else?

Re: Bulls locked to the death of one
If I read this right the story is from alaska, where his sister lives, doesn't mean they were killed there. Those look like rocky's to me. I've seen the elk on fognack and they don't grow long tines like those pictured. Typical roosevelt elk. If they are rosey's then they are monsters at that. I know this happened to a kid in Montana last year and he ended up shooting the bull during archery season with another head attached to it. The story was sent to me from my buddy who lives there. I'll see if I can find it. But regardless pretty cool to see. I've also heard of a few whitetails killed like this too and saw a couple of pics in magazines.
AHHHHHH, good recall ripnlips. I remember it now!!

Re: Bulls locked to the death of one
I got the same pic last year and the 'story' was that: An archery hunter in Utah was watching them fighting in the distance. He put the sneak on them and by the time he got close one had been killed. He stuck the live bull and brought both home. Another internet yarn! Good pic!
Back when I was going to school and working on the 6666's ranch, there is a mount of two whitetails shot back in the 1960's that are locked up. Story was that the foreman, JJ Gibson, shot the live one and took them to the taxidermist. The taxidermist couldn't get them apart without breaking the antlers so he mounted them in a corner of the big house.

Re: Bulls locked to the death of one
I wonder if the taxidermist could leave the tongue hanging like that - for effect.
