Default Lewis and Clark Hunting

I am heading to Lewis and Clark tomorow to do some scouting. I grew up hunting tillamook, but am looking for a change. Any suggestions on which islands to look at- upper ones such as Goose, Ironson, and Horseshoe or lower ones such as Marsh, Karlson, Seal, Russian. Second question, is it easier to launch at John Day or Aldrich point. I also thought there is a launch on Blind slough, is that true?

Thanks, Joey

More birds working the lower Islands IMHO. I always launch at Aldrich (know the way to the hunt much better) but John Day would be shorter, cost $2. Aldrich is a one lane ramp, it works okay, free.

There is a ramp at Blind slough, but it's marked private. Don't know how much that is enforced.

I would be going this weekend, but will probably be a blue bird day.

Give us a killing report, the opener was great!

Oh yeah, what about Tillamook? How has that hunted? Over there fishing I saw very few birds. I use to hunt that pretty heavy 6 years ago. Now doesn't seem to get the birds or is that what you like me to think?

How was it B&C?

I've never been there and was going to go down tomorrow for a boat ride and some scouting but my wife requested my company for the day and offered me a bribe I cannot turn down.

I may try again next week.

Any other tips for a newbee with a boat, a bag of ducks and no experience hunting in oregon?

thx

LH

L & C is SLOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW. Looks like the local population have figured out just where Carlson and tenisellie islands are and that they are a safe bet for not getting shot at. Still it will shoot almost as good as Sauvie's better if you know how to hunt it.

L & C is a tidal hunt. Know what tides to hunt and what the birds are doing durin the tides and you will do above average.

Warning, Keep you boats handy, Do not get dropped off in an area without one. Got the brown pants to prove that one several years ago. I think a dog is a must down there. The grass and weeds are very tall and the birds are hard to find. Remember it is very tidal effected. So go planning on spending the night if you hunt to late into the falling tide. As I found out last week we like not to have made it out of our area before hte tide fell. We had about 6" to get out in a certain area. man was I ever sweating that one. Lots to learn guys try and go with an experienced person or keep to the deep water areas.

Dan's right; the birds have moved on to greener (or safer) pastures.
A few bluebills out there but not enough yet to target them, IMO.

Spent the day out there yesterday and managed to scratch out three, but what a change from two weeks ago. Places that were full of mallards recently were completely empty of birds. The teal have also moved on.

When the tide is in, be very careful wading. Walking around in the grass with even a couple inches of water on it can ruin your day. I did that yesterday, stepped in a hole and nearly took a swim. I'm out of action for a week or so with a strained knee.

bigfish-

Be more than happy to share gas.

My wife wanted to make a family boat ride out of it but she is the fair weather type and I don't think the weather will be fair so I should be single willing and able.

Drop me a line
