Default 2nd season Elk!!

Is anyone out there going for 2nd season Elk? If so what area?

For me seeing all of the posts of the successful hunters out there is making me more and more anxious to go!! And also I like the new "Trophy page" that Jennie developed!!

I am torn between Heppner and White River units. I know one better that the other but I saw a herd of 50 elk durring bow season in Heppner this year with a nice 5X5 with 5 spikes as well. My luck I will be in Heppner and see a branched bull! Or if im in White River I will see a spike!! A catch 22!! Eithor way I will be out in gods country doing what I love for 7 days!!!!!!!!!!!

Isn't that the truth. Last 2 years I had spike tags and saw big bulls both years with no spikes. Last year I got into a huge heard with multiple rag horns and one big boy bringing up the rear(which I could have easily shot), but could not find a spike in the bunch before they vanished :depressed: This year I have a hair tag for Heppner and I bet I see nothing but cows.

What general area do you guys hunt in Heppner? I usually hunt around 5 mile.

Saddle Mt. 3-pt or better, my son and I both can get these tags (second and third choice preference wise). But I saw 10 elk last night in the scappose unit, 3 harvestable bulls in the bunch. So I will wait till the season is almost here before I decide which side of the road to hunt. Decisions...Decisions..General season tag or Saddle Mt? Also found actual bear tracks. One of which showed the claws real well.

I'm thinking of getting my son a second season tag and hunting Scapoose unit. He's still a little small for archery elk. Does anyone know if they open the gates on gas lines near ceder creek for elk season? I know they open them for youth rifle hunts. I'm a little worried about getting him into an area with lots of other people. Does anyone know how crowded that area gets?

Hey fishuntr where did you see that bear track? I saw one on the scappose side of the road a week or two ago. I also heard that there is a cougar in the neighborhood.

West Beulah - "Any Elk" (takes 2-3 pts so we don't get to go very often) :depressed: Looking forward to this year's trip.

Went out for a late season scouting trip out east . An area that I use to got to (10 years ago) has been sold by the beneficiaries of her estate (sons & doughters) what a shame  10 sq miles of the best hunting in eastern Oregon. I tried to find out some details of the land and bounderies but had no luck.. My trip was a good one never the less. I spotted a herd of 15 with a nice 5X5 and 4 smaller bulls, one huge spike that I will be looking for soon!!! He must of had 35 inch spikes!! Saw a few newly formed city's, some of these people must have 20 people in their groups and everyone has a 35 foot trailor!! I saw one set-up that had 5 trailors 5th wheels and 8 tents with about 2 cords of wood!!

Be safe, and good luck to all, esp me!!

I have been on the phone with my friends that went 1st season elk and not much for good news. And these guys are in the woods 3 days a week all year. I hope that I will be hunting the area that they are all hiding in  Anyone else herd any news about the 1st seasons hunt??

Be safe!

Hunted Heppner first season with a hair tag. I had a bad feeling about waiting 5 years for this tag. Only saw a group a 6 cows and they were hauling a$$ through the timber. As I stated in this post before, last 2 years I had to let big bulls walk away because I only had a spike tag. Could have easily shot elk every year I was waiting for the hair tag then I get it and get SKUNKED. I hunted hard from dawn till dark everyday.

The good news is that my dad got a spike. I truly would trade an elk for myself for an elk for him any day. When he shot the spike a nice 3 point ran out right at him, but being the good law abiding citizen he is he did not fill my tag also.

Overall success was pretty low. Did not see any camps with spike tags fill a tag. Saw a few cows taken, and VERY few small bulls. Gamey said they got a few bigger bulls over around Ditch creek.

Not going to put in for this tag anymore. It really is not worth waiting 5 years for a glorified cow tag.
