Fun, fun ,fun ,
Last evening after work I ran home grabbed the shot guns and my two kids and went to hunt ring neck.
To make a long story short. My son is 11 and has his youth hunting lisc. Last week end was the opener . I took my boy and my pup (morgan).
Just as we started walking at noon A friend of mine showed up with 5 guys . I was livid . The hunt instantly turned into a fiasco. The dog he brought was out of control and the guys were not my froends and I didnt know them. They lined up and took over our walk, pushing me and my son out of the brush and out of the bird zone. They had brought the wrong shells and were shooting #8 dove load at them and crippling them .Within about 20 minutes they had flushed about 25 ***** and haddent cleanly killed a bird. I called my son on the walky talky and told him to back off and come with me back to the truck. End of hunt.
Next day ,,, I took my son out again . The "friend" was not there so we had a good hunt but couldnt seem to get up on a rooster.
It s about 4:oo p.m. and Im taking my son to a secret spot where I always find some birds. Just as Im pulling out from the dirt road we are on ,here comes my "friend " again. This time he is by himself except his dog.
Im a non-conflict type of person and I didnt say anything about the day before . But he mentioned that he was sorry about the fiasco.
As the good natured person that I am , I said that we were going to try another spot. He came along.
I dropped my son and "friend "off and was to drive around and pick them up at the end of the walk. I drove around and parked . I sat there for about 5 minutes and right next to me about 20 birds jumped and flew about 100 yards and landed in some tall brush. I called my son on the radio
and told him to hurry over ,,,,,, just as my son go to within 50 yards of the birds I see my "friends " dog .... no one around right in the middle of the birds (shorthair). The dog didnt even try to point it just started busting birds all over the place. My poor little son didnt even get a shot .I woke up several times that night with that image in my dreams. A shorthair busting birds all over ,,, all night.
So now Im fired up. I decided to not take anyone but my son and my dog no matter what .
Now back to last night,,, I pull up to the spot with my son and my dog only, there is a bunch of Huns sitting in the road and a couple hen running around.
I let the boy and dog out they walk about 200 yards and the pup locks up tight. My son is short and they were walking a field of sugar beats and he couldnt see Morgan on point so I called on the two way and got him headed the right direction. Walking through was tough and it took him about 5 minutes to get zeroed in on the dog. Still pointing. As he walked up a rooster broke out and only made it about 20 yard befoer my boy put the hammer on him. Morgan made a nice fetch and I was relieved of the burden of trying to make this happen. Now things will run more smoothly ,,, Pup and boy are set ... Oh yah,, this was the dogs first kill off point. Fun , Fun Fun. id. painter

Re: Fun, fun ,fun ,
Congrats on getting your son into a bird and kudos to him for closing the deal.
Was Morgan the pup that got into the barbwired or something awhile back? If so, glad to hear she has recovered and getting back to work.

ID Painter:
Just finished 4 days with my Dad, both brothers, and my nephew from Wisconsin. Ended up with 15 pheasants and 4 huns. Looks like a good bird year again. Nothing like a kid getting his first rooster. Now if I can get my daughter to actually calm down enough to get a shot, it will be a great year!. You taking your kid to the F & G's youth pheasant hunt? I'm volunteering with my dog, always a lot of fun. Dog ends up pretty frustrated, puts up a bunch of birds and not very many fall down!
