Trapping
Opinions?

I, for the first time in my life, agree with Pacelle.
I used to do a fair bit of trapping in high school and we were adamant about checking our traps daily. I think the animals deserve it. I don't know that there is a problem with folks not checking daily but it seems a reasonable request to me.

Re: Trapping
I was under the impression that we were required to check traps every 24 hours. I usually checked mine every morning. Animals for the most part were in traps 8 hours , considering most were caught during the nocturnal hours.

I have trapped for many years and always check my traps daily, and as early as possible. The article in question is referring to a trap check review for "predatory" animals. Which mainly applies to Government trappers and others doing damage control work with coyotes. The people invloved in that kind of trapping need more time to check traps typically because they cover alot of miles. The HSUS has a goal, and that is to stop all Hunting,Trapping, Fishing in the united states. They have big money and will not stop trying. Take a look on their website sometime if you have any doubts about this. I believe all hunters, trappers & fisherman have to stand together or we will lose. First it was bear and cougar hunters, now trappers, next it will be bow hunters and so on. The issue is the trap check, but in reality it is a larger issue.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Trappers were a target long before bear and lion hunters. This is more of the same propaganda and lies. Fishing is also on their hit list.
I haven't trapped for over 20 years but I do remember the 24 hr trap check regulation. I checked my coyote traps from a distance with a spotting scope. Some of my muskrat sets got checked twice in 24 hrs.

Re: Trapping
Prawnasorus,
EXACTLY!
They have one agenda. By picking off the fringes (hunters with dogs, trappers, etc) they weaken the whole body.

I was actually referring to the first group that was put out of business (for the time being). For a group that alledgedly cares so much about animals, I would like to know how much money the HSUS puts into habitat each year?. We know what sportsmans groups do such as : DU, RMEF, OHA, etc.

Re: Trapping
Does anyone know the number one organization in protecting hunters, trappers, and fishermen's rights? We have a lot of hunting organizations, but which one gives the biggest bang for the buck(pun intended)? I'd like to put my money where my mouth is, and help protect our rights.

Re: Trapping
I know full well the hsus agenda. I think as an organization they pretty well suck. Thats why I said "for once I agree with Pacelle."
I have no doubt about their ultimate goal. I think they've proven that time and again. I was unaware of a provision regarding checking every 24 hours. Its been long enough ago that I trapped that I don't know the current regs.
I was just pointing out that it seems to be an idea that makes sense, which coming from hsus is an aberration at best.

Re: Trapping
I check my traps every morning. Like Sledder, the animals in my traps are never there more than 8hrs, unless they were caught in the daylight which is highly unusual. By leaving traps unchecked, you are missing potential catches. I know quite a few times, I have removed an animal from a trap and had another in the same trap the next morning.
The extended check laws are for the government guys as stated above. It allows them to have saturday and sundays off. Prawnasaurous is correct on that. It also give leeway to the guys that trap the desert, and sometimes have impassable roads due to weather.
As far as the videotapes, and the HSUS, most of the videos I have seen from these folks from ads, and commercials, show animals taken using improper or illegal trapping methods. Those folks doing those types of activities, do what snaggers do for legitimate sport fishermen. (they give legitimate trappers a bad name)
I have a feeling they are just trying to get a little steam built up for another ballot measure.
