Deschutes,
I got into some on the crooked river last weekend.
There was a decent number of birds.

Re: Any Chukar Reports?
Deschutes2- The UCAP program is a great program. This is my second year utilizing the program and the different pieces off land we have hunted have all yielded birds. Once you find the yellow signs, find the ranch. The owner will have the access cards for you. Have your license handy because it requires your lic #, name, ph, etc. The owner will give you a "general" idea of where to go. They usually tell you to find a canyon and have a go. With the weather being warmer, ask about creaks or water on the land. We have jumped coveys in the wheat stubble, so be sure to hunt high and low. We work up from the truck to the wheat fields, then work the edges of the sagebrush along the fields to the top of the canyon and then back down thru the canyon back to the truck. You can usually work several decent sized canyons in a day doing it this way. good luck.
ps: make sure to get a pass for the season rather than just the day. if the hunting is good, you can go back and hunt and not have to check in w/ the rancher each time.

Strigtweave: What is the UCAP program? I would really like info on it if you don't mind sharing. I would like to get my dogs out on a good chucker hunt. Is there a number to call and find out about this program? Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks, Fishrite

Re: Any Chukar Reports?
Fishrite,
The UCAP program is sponsored by the odfw and your upland license fees. ODFW pays farmers something like $.50 an acre to allow public hunters access as long as they contact the property owner and get written permission (in most cases). There are some properties that are posted "Welcome to hunt" where you do not have to have written permission. There are a couple hundred thousand acres available but there is no formal list available. You have to drive until you find the signs. The majority of the properties are up north in Gilliam and Morrow counties. Very worth it. I hunted a couple of ranches last year, lots of birds and had the place to myself. Good Luck.

Re: Any Chukar Reports?
Deshutes2: Thanks for the information...but those are big counties..can you give me a general location? Email me at tc.williams@comcast.net if you would like. I do really appreciate the information. I have seen a lot of bird in the Baker City area...but that is a long drive. I would like to find something a little closer. Thanks again, Fishrite

Re: Any Chukar Reports?
Fishrite: I got all my info thru ODFW. The guy that manages the upland department was very helpful. We actually called in the spring looking for a place to hunt turkey, other than in roseburg, and just continued on w/ the conversation to upland birds. He didn't give specific owners names or anything that detailed, just general areas of where to go and look for the signs. There is a blurb in the Upland regs about the program and how it works and possibly even a phone #. Give the guy a call and you may find a place to hunt for a long time.
