Default Salmon Trout Enhancement Program Conference

Tillamook Anglers, A Non-Profit Corporation, will be sponsoring the semi-annual Salmon Trout Enhancement Program Conference in Tillamook County in 2004. The conference we sponsored in 1988, thanks to you, our local merchants, was the best attended and most exciting conference to date. We are hoping that with your help this year will far and exceed the ‘88 event. Conference dates are March 26, 27 and 28 and folks from Oregon, Washington, California, and Canada will be coming to Tillamook County and staying three to four days. Our goal is to introduce these folks to the fine community of Tillamook, and make them feel welcome and want to come again. Tillamook Anglers along with Nestucca Anglers are contributing $2,000 a piece to the cost of this conference. The expense of a Conference of this magnitude is more than our two Non-Profit Corporations can handle. We are hoping that our local merchants will help off-set the cost, and hopefully in turn you will recoup in future sales any dollars you donate to the cause.

Some of you have already donated merchandise and dollars. We have received donations ranging from $250 to $1,000. We are still in need of approximately $4,000 to make this conference something that Tillamook County will be proud of. We need product for lunches, dinners, and Friday Night Social Hour, as well as various items to use as raffle and door prizes. In 1988 the local merchants participated by sponsoring a treasure hunt, free swimming for kids at the YMCA, and a free movie at the theater and special discounts in your place of business for conference attendees.

Hopefully, after all is said and done, there will be a few dollars left over to use in fish enhancement projects to increase fishing opportunities in Tillamook County that will bring more fishermen and more dollars spent in beautiful Tillamook County. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Feel free to call me at home 503-842-6519, cell 503-812-1572 or e-mail @ jdovetillanglers@tillanet.com. Checks can be made payable to Tillamook Anglers Corporation, tax-exempt ID # 94-3097459.

Thank you for your continued support,

Jerry A. Dove, President
Tillamook Anglers Corporation

STEP into the Future: Salmon-Trout Enhancement Program Conference

The 2004 STEP Conference will be held on the weekend of March 26-28 at the Tillamook County Fairgrounds in Tillamook, Oregon. This year’s event is being hosted by the Tillamook Anglers, Nestucca Anglers and the Tillamook Bay Boating Club. The conference theme is “STEP into the Future”, a look at the evolution of the Salmon-Trout Enhancement Program and STEP projects, as well as current and future issues affecting Oregon salmon and steelhead populations.
Sessions will include a variety of topics on education, fish propagation, habitat restoration, and fisheries management (see attached agenda). Roundtable sessions, where attendees can interact with presenters, other resource managers, scientists and community leaders are also planned. Supervised activities for children will be provided and include games, knot tying, T-shirt fish printing, fly tying and casting contests. In addition, there will be a Friday evening social and poster session with fresh local seafood and a Saturday night buffet dinner with Bill Monroe from The Oregonian as a guest speaker. Tours of various STEP projects are planned for Sunday morning with an option to participate in ODFW’s Wild Winter Steelhead Broodstock Collection Programs on the Wilson and Nestucca Rivers with local guides.
Registration is $10 per individual or $15 per family if received before March 1. Early registrants are also eligible for an “early bird” prize drawing for a $350 rod and reel combo. Other door prizes, raffles and a silent auction will also take place during the conference. More information about STEP, etc:

STEP
Salmon-Trout Enhancement Program

STEP is a program within the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) that seeks to provide the greatest possible opportunity for volunteer participation in achieving management objectives to restore Oregon’s salmon and trout. Healthy, sustainable stocks of salmon and trout are what we are all about.
Each of Oregon’s watersheds has some management priorities that are unique. Generally, STEP volunteers conduct educational activities, inventory and monitor fish populations and fish habitat, assist with habitat restoration projects, and rear fish where appropriate.
Since STEP began in the early 1980s, public response has been enthusiastic and overwhelming. Literally thousands of Oregonians have become involved in helping to enhance salmon and trout populations. Volunteers continue to donate their time and effort and gain in their understanding of this prized natural resource.
STEP is funded by the Sport Fish Restoration Program of the US Fish and Wildlife Service and ODFW, and is supported by the many hours of volunteer service contributed.

I would be surprised if Norm Ritchie (ANWS President and Sandy Cahpter member) was not present. Gov. K. appointed him to the STAC committee. He is a great guy who knows alot about fisheries and has been active wih ODF&W for many years.

The STEP projects are the best way I know of to help improve the fishing resource. Anglers who enjoy working together to make for better fishing should attend this conference to make plans for their own rivers and projects. Make your reservation right away.

Man… no one ever says that to me…

I will endeavor to ask questions regarding STEP’s role in ODFW’s new Native Fish Conservation Policy as well as STEP’s HPMP requirements under the accompanying Hatchery Management Policy. I am sure many other questions will arise but those will be my primary avenues of investigation and comment.

Will see you there

I am going to listen and learn. I would encourage everyone else to do the same.

This is a great opportunity for everyone to see what is happening with our fisheries. I have questions, and hope to find some answers. It could change my mind on some current issues...........Who knows?

If you plan on coming to the step conference, you might me interested in the guided fishing trips for the wild steelhead broodstock program. Local guides are donating there time to take folks on either the Wilson or Nestuca. Cost is $150.00 per person, everything furnished, Friday or Sunday. Must be pre=registered. All proceeds go to local fish enhancement projects. For full details check Jennie's front page at the top. Jerry
