Deer hunt 2003 (pic)

Well I wouldn't put the 2003 deer hunting trip down as the most enjoyable in history, but we did manage to have a good time. Between not being able to have a campfire, being disqusted by the native americans, arguing with the OSP, and being chewed out for wandering on to an outfitters property, we managed to have some fun.
There were 9 of us with tags, and all but 2 got to shoot at a deer. My cousin's wife was pretty crippled up with a back injury, and I never saw a buck inside of 700 yards. My 13 year old got his second buck, again he was with my Dad so I have yet to be there when he gets a deer, but it is enjoyable for my Dad. You have to treasure those times. My brother-in-law got a decent 4-point. K9Jeff,my sister, and her father-in law all got forken-horns. We worked our butts off in some steep country, but there just doesn't seem to be many decent bucks. It was so dry and crackly, they may have been getting out way ahead of us. My sister hit one about 1/2 hour before dark, and her and Dad just ran out of time, but they knew it was hit pretty good. We rounded up the whole crew, and headed out with lanterns and flashlights. We knew with the heat that it would be spoiled by morning. We actually found it crumpled up behind a tree. That made everyone feel good, as she and dad were pretty upset about not being able to find it at first. We really hadn't expected to draw tags this year, so it was really kind of a bonus. In a year in which my wife survived cervical cancer, and I spent months recovering from a ruptured achillies tendon, you just have to embrace the times that are here. Only drawing every couple of years makes the years go by faster. I am afraid that a couple more hunts and my boy will be off to college, and we all be 6 years older. My dad said "you couldn't assemble another group like this if you tried." I replied "why would anyone try?" Just kidding of course, it is a great group and we have a lot of fun.

Sounds like a great time with your family.
I am learning (later than I wish I had) just how valuable those kind of times are.

Good job on the Family Hunt!

I especially like the part where you all took lanterns and went out and recovered the animal. I hate it when people leave them out overnight without even an effort.

What a great story. I can picture the whole crew out with lanterns and flashlights combing the brush for the one that was down. Brought back some pretty good memories and the feeling of success and completion when you finally find it is what hunting is all about. I admire your tenacity.

Here's wishing you always draw enough tags to make it a family trip....

Sounds like a great hunt, despite all the little annoyances. That's what it's all about. Friends and/or family getting together building memories to carry them through life.

I cant wait till next year. I dont want my nice steak dinner bothered by "I hit one and cant find it." Do that on "Taco Bake" night.

I did have a good time. Don thinks I am the go to guide now, and in my mind I am. I worship the "dave" way of hunting. Its effective.

I wore my new hat today,... although no one understood.

Drop me a line and I will put you in "the sled" for some clack steelhead....

Its great to have hunting friends....evem if they do rant around the "virtual fire"

Great Story, sounds like some of my childhood, with the family/friends gathering in hunting camp. I'm jealous. Enjoy such times.

When we first start hunting the main goal is to "get" something. Later on the whole hunting experience--the opportunty to "get" something-- becomes more important than "getting" something. It's easier to live vicariously thru our daughters,sons,mates, and friends. I have no problem waiting for the hunting partner to catch up to enjoy the perfect covey rise instead of experiencing impatience. Wasn't always thiat way.---Disclaimer: Don't tell anyone I wrote this.--They will think I'm getting "soft". Stories like this make me smile.

Lesson 1. remember to give K9 wrong unit number when applying.
Lesson 2. Learn to speak native american language.
Lesson 3. Continue to seek black and white answers (eliminate the grey).
Lesson 4. Don't let Dad and Mark cjoose the campsite.
