Default Let it snow!

I have to laugh. As I sit here having my morning cup of coffee and catching up on Ifish! My black lab Maggie is lying in front of the woodstove grunting and groaning from too much fun yesterday.
Myself and a friend went to Summer Lake yesterday in search of ducks and geese and we had a great time! Rumor is last friday there were approximately 300 snows on the refuge, yesterday I would say between 3000-5000, we both shot limits! It was quite a spectacle. It was my first snow goose hunt not to mention my dog's first. She made 3 marked retrieves and 3 blinds for us from 25-250 yards! She also helped out some pass shooters set up on a lake w/o a boat or waders and made the best blind retrieve she has ever made conservatively 300 yards into some tules. I was so proud of her and the hunters were very thankful. She also tracked 2 wounded snows that ran into some tules after sailing for aproximately 100 yards. After she had made the blind retrieve for one guy they mentioned how they had lost two cripples and we offered to take a look. Maggie found both. This was our first hunt of the year.....next week pheasant and chukar!

The working dog is a happy dog.

A great conservation tool too.

Sweet! As a relative newcomer to having a my own lab with me while hunting, I never could have imagined the simple pleasure of watching your hardwork (training) and the sheer joy in the dog as they get to do what they love.

Here is a quote from E Donald Thomas in "By Dawn's Early Light"...

"I likely would not put out the effort to shoot a duck on the other side of the yard if I didn't have a dog to retrieve it."(paraphrased)

Isn't that so true! I really enjoy hunting, but I LOVE watching my pup work. Sure keeps me going back out at O'dark thirty and laying in the mud.
