Game Bird Distribution info
I'm looking for information on Oregon Upland Game Bird distribution on public lands, I have left voice mail with odfw (no return call yet) and I have Googled with no good results. I usually hunt UGB as an incendental hunt during archery season and now I'm looking to take it up to the next leval. My pups would love it if I could find birds.

Audubon bird book has mapped (national) of distrib, also, Roger Tory Peterson has a few books with awesome Artwork of each species and national distrib maps.
Most of the species are specific to certain habitat, which occurs at specific elevations (or is limited by elevation) precip, etc.
So if you can find those habitat areas, you have a good shot at finding the animals that like to be in them.

Game Bird Hunting in Oregon is an ODFW publication. It covers wildlife areas as well as general distribution and characteristics of the various gamebird species.

I used to have a great one, I think it was called "Peterson's field guide to the birds of Western America"
I really got a lot out of it.
The problem with the Audubon Red Book is that some of the Photos are not as useful as Peterson's illustrations. Peterson even does drawings of Birds on the foot, and on the wing, really outstanding artwork.
He also puts the ducks in a chart with all of the different species on the same display, so you can compare the sizes of different species, and flight postures too.
You can learn the way a mallard carries itself while in flight vs, how a merganser does etc,
He takes all different kinds of birds into the book too, not just upland, not just waterfowl.. songbirds, you name it.
Would make a great gift for anyone that likes to bird hunt.

I made a call to ODFW yesterday and left a voice mail, well I just got a call back and talked to Dave, very informitive and a pleasant person to talk to.
