Default hearing aids

I'm about to take the plunge and get something to help me hear...Does anyone have some and suggestions for brands? I understand there are some that cut out gunshots (but not spouse's frequencies)...

Bill,
my cousin owns several hearing aid stores and actually uses a hearing aid while he is in the woods. He is pretty young, 40 or so, but definately benefits from using them. Feel free to call him. He will could give you some good advice on over the counter devices v.s. the real thing without trying to give you a sales pitch. He is an avid hunter and fisherman. His business is "Cascade Hearing Center" Ask for Dan King. 503-253-3131. Best of luck.

I have heard the hearing aids like Walkers game ear, do allow you to hear things better, but it is hard to traingulate what direction the sound is coming from I have never used one so I dont know first hand.

I got a pair for pistol competition a couple years ago and use them when hunting. They are great. You can crank them up to increase way beyond normal hearing. When you take a shot there is a muffled bang. Nothing near what it is without them. For competition shooting, I have the volume turned on maybe 1/6th the way up.

The pair I use are made by ProEar and are the ProMag Dimension 2 model for big bore rifles. If you are in the area and want to give 'em a try let me know.

There are other companies that make the type that go inside the ear. I went with the brand most of the other competitive shooters I saw wore.

One reason that I use them when hunting is that each side has its own mike and keeps the sounds stereo. I can locate where a sound comes from about as accurately with them on as without them.

I have the Walker's Game Ear, the original version. It's better than nothing but I'm not thrilled with it. It's very hard to figure direction while hunting and the squirrels drive you nuts. I archery hunt so the only time it cuts out is when I bugle real loud.

Bottom line is, for what I use it for, it's a bit of a pain but "I think" it's better than without it.
For shooting it might be pretty cool .

Where did you get them and what did you pay?
I need to do something about ear protection while I hunt.
