Getting guns redone?
I have a gun that I got from my uncle. A 300 win mag made by Parker Hale. He never did keep good care of his guns. The stock needs to be redone and the bolt and barrel needs to be re-blued.
Anyone know anyone local that will restore guns? I would like to get a deluxe finish to the stock and get the barrel and bolt re-finished. I also need to get a recoil pad put on this 300 win mag. The old one was no good.
I also got a Remington 660, 243 win from him. The stock is not that bad but the barrel needs redone. It would be best if the barrel and stock and bolt was redone on it too.
Anyone know anyone? How about a web site? A price? Price per gun? Would like to keep this in the Portland Vancouver area.
Thanks
Mike H.

Re: Getting guns redone?
Leave the 660 as is. It is a bit collectable, and refinishing it would harm the value of the gun. If you refinish it, you will make it a hunting rifle only.
If it were mine, I would leave it as is. If you love the short light concept, buy one of the many carbines now available.
The PH can be done by any snith that does wood stock work. You can refinish it too. As far as chekering goes, there is a Gal who lives( I think) in the OC area. She used to checher guns for Kimber. I think Kathy rings a bell. But my memory is faded on a good day.
Good Luck with the shooting irons.

Re: Getting guns redone?
i have had good luck with Allison and Carey Gunworks out in portland. (eastside)
what Flatfish said is true about refinishing guns and lowering their value. in alot of cases a gun will be worth more with a beat up stock and the bluing worn off than it is when it is re-finished and new looking. just FYI before you make a big change to some old family heirlooms.

Re: Getting guns redone?
Mike- you may want to check the whipple creek armory and see if they do it out there? They're out your way, at the ridgefield exit just west of the fairgrounds. They put sling mounts on my rifle, and they turned out real nice like. Also, I refinished my own rifle, and I think it looks as good, and has proved as durable as my uncle's who had his professionally refinished, plus it's gratifying, BUT the scratches are a little more painful. Good luck, TOC.

Re: Getting guns redone?
Right now I wanna work on the PH 300 win mag. Not to worried about the 660 243 win.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Collectors value is one thing on the 660, but if its a good looking tool you want to use than refinish it and the heck with collectors value.
Everyone has a favorite: Mine Al's Gun Shop in Verbort Oregon. No idea where Amboy Washington is, so it is probably out of your way.

Re: Getting guns redone?
KingFisher85,
I can't speak for the Allison and Carey, as I have not used their service before. However, I have heard very good things about them.
As for Whipple Cr. Armory? I had an old family heirlum Win. 410 pump shotgun reblued and refinished there. It took over a year to get done. They did a great job, don't get me wrong. They did everything to factory standards at the time of that gun's manufacture date. It just took a lonnnnnnnnnnnng time. The cost was comparable to those quoted to you earlier.
If you are in a hurry? I'd probably go to Portland... Sorry Dan. Otherwise it's nice to spend your money locally, espeacially if you don't care for the drive to Portland.
As for those of you who do not know where Amboy is located? Just about every place is out of the way for anyone that lives there, but it's worth it!
Good luck Mike,
Ragnar
