Down riggers

It is now time to address adding DR to the new boat. The wife is over the sticker shock of the boat and I need to keep her off balance. So the Idea is to spend some more $$$.
So what have you Salty dogs put on and why.

Scotty elec.Fastest retreive and rated for the heaviest weight,reliabilty,simple release from bracket that works and can not fail,low profile,lifetime warranty,Ollie Damons in Portland factory warranty center. I have two and they have worked perfect.I use them hard in the saltwater andI fish deep with bait so they go up and down often.Rick

I have Penn 625s. They came with the boat. I have been happy with them. If I were to replace them, Scotty electric cranking that weight gets old.

Just make sure they will handle a HEAVY weight.
Alot of DR,s are set up for 10lbs or so. In the ocean you will be down better with at least 12 or aven 15lbers.
In Puget Sound you are not even fishing if not down 90 ft. In the ocean off the Columbia, you could easily be 100ft or more. The tidal currents will pull even a 12 lb ball really hard. Remember that one of the neat things about a DR is being able to fish where you see the fish on the finder.
I use really heave weights and usually can see the ball on the screen. I have 2- 36 year old Penn 600's and they still work perfectly.

Scotty downriggers are the only ones with a lifetime warranty. definetly run with the electric models. Nothing beats flipping a switch, and letting it take care of itself while you enjoy the battle.

I have a Cannon electric that is a HUGE improvement over my old manual crank Cannon. But, it is slow on the retrieve compared with my buddy's Scotty.

Next time, I'll get the Scotty and I will never buy a manual one (unless it is for my "guests")

Love my Scotty 1106 electrics. They have the rest beat and if you are looking to spend more bucks you can buy an electric crab pot puller that goes on the Scotty mount and plugs into the Scotty plug. My back really likes this.

Another vote for the Scotty's. We got the 1116's with the 60" adjustable reach. We love them.

Wow, this must be a Scotty thread! Well, I will have to break this thread. I have Cannon Mag 20s which I purchased 10 years ago and am very happy with the preformance and durability.

Heres a second on the penns.I've never had a scotty but my magnum 10s have worked great with no problems down 150' plus with 15 lbs.

having owned Scotty, Penn and run Cannons extensively on Grt lakes, I like Scotty best overall - but it has been awhile since I have used cannons..

Penn has the best swivel base. Issues w gearbox leaks got me to move away from them..The Scottty have lifetime warranty but they need more tuneruppers than my Penns ever did - mostly brake and belt adjustments. You can do those yourself - but it's a pain mid-week on a fishing bender.. The extension booms are so cool, w those I can fish 3 riggers on my 8' 6" beam boat.

scotty 1106. I love mine. The are also tops in saltwater.
I spoke with a service warrenty shop back east about which makers they repair most. Hand's down the scotty's were most dependable.
