Re: Great Opener
I, too, had a great opener - a classic almost.
I was hunting a moderate sized impoundment over in the desert, and moved in before daylight to set up. Surprisingly, it was rainy and overcast the night before and into the day. As shooting time approached, I could see a narrow band of clear sky to the east, and as the sun came up it turned the whole eastern sky blood red. When I looked the other way, there was a beautiful double rainbow. Truly memorable.
My first shot was pretty unusual too. I was just settling into my "hide" when the only two other guys on the lake started shooting. I looked up to see two black shapes hurtling at me off the water. I raised up, tracked, and shot cleanly behind one of the shapes - then realized it was a grouse! They had spooked from across the lake and I had naturally assumed they were ducks. Later they came back the way they had gone, sailing over my head and across the lake again. Darndest thing I ever saw.
We got some great shooting in, but it was as cold as January. It even snowed on us a couple of times, enough so the dog had white splotches on her black coat. We shivered and shook just like we do in the late season.
Watching the sky put on its display and listening to the widgeons swoop around in that crisp desert air was enough to make the morning worthwhile even if I hadn't shot a thing. Pretty fun stuff!
