I'm waiting for the snow to fly on Hood before I head out after my blacktail. So I headed out for some birds and big fish. Hunted my 9-month-old shorthair this weekend over in eastern Oregon. After months of training and solid bloodlines, my pup brought it all together. Solid points and birds to hand! Saturday's hunting conditions were not so good (rainy), so after a half-day hunt my partner and I headed to our favorite steelhead spots. We caught one hatchery fish about five pounds. Went back to the cabin early to rest and prepare for Sunday. Fished early Sunday and landed two native steelhead in the 26-28 inch range. Nice fish both were very bright and spunky! Packed up around nine and headed to the ranch. We cleaned gutters and weed whacked for a few hours before our afternoon hunt. Conditions were much better. Clear cold and a bit breezy. I knew the birds would be holding tight. Started the hunt off well with a few groups of a dozen or so and eventually found the mother load. Found a 4X4 muley buck that died recently. My dog was so excited! She knew exactly what to do. This year is just fun in the field locating birds. She hunted well above my expectations and my buddy was shocked at how she performed. Proper introduction to wing and shot makes all the difference in the world. I'm looking forward to many years of upland hunting. It's weekends like last that make me realize how fortunate I am to live and hunt in such a beautiful place.
