The wife and I use whole chicken from safeway. Usualy try to get day stuff at lower prices. We also save salmon and halibut carcesses. turkey works also. The #1 thing we have found is fresh bait works the best no matter type of bait. If you have rings seals don't bother bait as much. good luck.

I figured the seals have easier access to rings and they like fish. I stopped using rings a long time ago and went with the pots because they don't have access to the meat. Seals don't like chicken or turkey so go with either of those. Crab do not care for rotten food (but will eat it if that's all there is) so like ICFish said, use only fresh foods. Frozen food works really good and lasts a lot longer. Happy Crabbing.

I agree!Fresh bait works alot better that stinky bait you leave out for a couple days.

Seals cannot get into a bait box, or at least aren't patient or smart enough. A bait box can easily be zip tied or clipped to the bottom of a ring.

Last time I was out there a seal followed us around for a little while until it figured out the bait box was seal proof. He left, and we didn't get any bait stolen.

Turky legs, cheap, reusable, seals won't touch them.

I disagree, seals can and will tear a bait box up, even metal ones. This happned to us once in newport, and twice in waldport, they mangled our metal bait boxes and pryed the fish out of them.
I wont put fish of any sort in a crab ring, only in crab pots.

Friday put three traps in at Crab Harbor and only had two keepers. We used bait sold at Garabaldi marina.

I guess anything can happen, but I haven't ever had a bait box touched, and I can't remember the last time I went crabbing without seals 20 yards from the boat. Whenever I go there are usually a number of others crabbing in the area as well, maybe they feed the seals for me.
