Default Anyone go after razor clams this morning?

The wife wants to go after razor clams in the morning down at Gearhart. Not the best tide (0.2 at Seaside), but we have done ok at that. Was wondering with the stormy weather if the surf had been rough? They don't like to show with the pounding surf.

Any reports?

I'll just wait and go after yours tomorrow afternoon.

The sea indeed has been rough....

Was at Seaside and Cannon beach today from 9am til 5pm. It wasn't bad at all. My brother was there earlier in the morning around 7amish. It wasn't as bad as we had thought and seen predicted by the weather folks. Although, as we drove South on 101 towards Tillamook, the seas did look rougher. Not sure if that will help. But, the sun was peaking out later in the afternoon in Cannon Beach.

Anyone else see the sailboat parked in the sand between Seaside and Del Rey?? Was driving north when we spotted it. It was in the surf so we didn't stop, but I figure there's got to be some news on it.

I hope the owners weren't anywhere near it when it hit the surf and sand.

Yes, I saw it. As luck would have it, I accidentally clammed
there last week. It was dark and there was nobody on the beach. When I got to the water I saw this big thing in the sand and thought it might be a dead whale. As I got closer I realized it was a boat. The whole time I was clamming I was saying to myself why are there all these tire tracks on the clam beds ??? Must have been people checking it out.
Needless to say, I only got 3 clams. Don't clam near the sailboat, all the clams have been driven on

My girlfriend and I went to Gearhart clamming. We arrived a little before 5:00 am. We got 1 clam for our efforts. That was 1 more than the only other group out there got.

This was only our second time ever clamming. The first time we both limited out in this area. So I don't know what we were doing wrong. What is the best time to be there? I thought right at low water. If the clams are not showing then how do you know where to dig?

in that area for the morning tide, I would have started at 3am..

the surf was pounding the sand a ways out in the afternoon...you have to work the sand..tap/pound the sand with your feet, poles, shovel handles, tip of clam gun...cover lots of sand at the receeding waves edges.

most of the signs/shows I found were a slight movement of sand moments after tapping the sand...be very focused of sand movement/divots while working the sand...today will be the same..you must WORK the sand if you want a limit.

We made it down. Guess I am not too skilled at getting them in the dark. Once it got light, we did so so. Ended up with 23 for the effort as the tide was coming in quick.

The run is late this year. Don't bother.

Call your friends, too. Tell them to come home. Not worth it.

Nothing to see here.

Move along.

We were down between Geahart and Warrenton and got 4 limits last night then another 4 this morning. We hit the beach this morning about 5am and were done before the sun came up....

What is the trick to getting them in the dark? Set up a lantern, have one person stomp and the others watch for shows? Will just a plan propane lantern work?
We got there before daylight but only had a flashlight. I got a couple having the wife stomp and I followed her with the flashlight.
I need to get this figured out as most of the good tides are not during daylight hours this time of year.

A lantern is the only way to go,it casts light on a bigger area then you can watch the sand for them going down as well as seeing the shadow of a dimple already made. A flashlight just wont work the light is too concentrated.

We had one lantern for two people and walked side by side holding the lantern between us tapping and watching for shows. The better the lantern(double mantle)the more you are going to see.

We could of dug many more limits this morning the clams were everywhere.

I have not seen when the next series of minus tides are but would be more than willing to see if we could meet up down there next time there is a series that is in the dark.

PM if you want to....

I can't believe some of these reports.

I went on Saturday and Sunday afternoon north of Ocean Park, with EASY limits. The two guys I was with that have gone before got their 15 in less than 10 minutes along with me. It took us maybe a half hour total for some not so teachable new guys that were with us to get theirs. This is consistent with everything I've heard from other people clamming anywhere from Seaside to where we were. We had our limits 2 hrs before low tide each day, and I'm sure we could have done it even earlier.

If there were no limits we could easily have 150 clams a day. Almost every time I saw a hole or a spout after a wave went by I saw 20 others I could pick from.

You want to start clamming as much as 3 hours before low tide.

You didn't come close to needing a lantern on either of these days.
