Re: Hunting Reports week 10/11 - 10/17
I took my 9 year old daughter with me for her first ever tromp around the woods today and we had a blast. No shooters but we saw 7 deer, 1 of which was a spike. Several grouse made a loud exit, found where 1 met its demise by a coyote. Also had the opportunity to teach her how to walk quietly which she is very good at. We're both really looking forward to the next trip. Thanks to Vandal for the tips on where to go, we did hear a fair amount of shooting.

Little float trip today with my buddy Cody. Came home with 10 mallards and a buck. Just a little blacktail, but that's more meat than I got mule deer hunting this year. Watched some people learn why it is not a good idea to shoot out of a canoe. They were okay, but lost their guns and gear. Hopefully some really cool pictures to follow.

Took my son out south of MtHood this afternoon when the storm started to break. I figured the deer would be out moving, but we didn't see a hair! Maybe tomorrow morning. We did see a Bald Eagle this evening though, pretty cool.

Re: Hunting Reports week 10/11 - 10/17
Hunted the coast range hard today. Started on the Wilson, went over to the Trask and then around to Carlton. Count for the day, was 7 does, 1 unknow and a lots of tracks. Couldn't put antlers on anything today, and boy were the road hunters out in force. I was walking a logging road to go hunt a spot about 1/2 mile up the road and was passed by 7 trucks in 15 minutes. My tracks were the only ones I saw in every spot I went to...
Hopefully some of those does will grow horns in the next couple weeks.

Re: Hunting Reports week 10/11 - 10/17
One Spike, three Does, one Cow Elk. 70 trillion rain drops that all smelled like pineapple did it rain Sunday AM or what.
My luck on finding wlak in areas isn't going well. Started in one gate Sunday am to find that it was the back gate and the front gate was open. There wasn't near the road hunter pressure as I expected. It was private property and the only open roads were at the bottom of the hills.
No big deal for me now that I know what is going on there. Problem is the area will no be open again while I can hunt it - that was really depressing to find out after I spent the day learning where everything was and were the best spots to hunt were. Talk about sign - WOW.

Took my nephew (12) and son (10) out to the sunny side of the state to learn about hunting. You know, wind direction, terrain, stalking, being quiet (ya right) and ethics. Finally on the 3rd day the buck gods brought his nice one home to him. 1 shot from my 25-06 did the trick just before dark. Then the real work began and they learned, hopefully. Was fun

Re: Hunting Reports week 10/11 - 10/17
Hunted up on hebo saturday, sunday and monday only to see 11 does ,nothing with horns. The amount of road hunters in this area was down this year from previous years, still to many.Maybe the weather was a factor? Good luck to you elk hunters who bought a tag for the first season. There are some areas they are clearing brush and a few trees
right along 14, seen one cow and calf making there way thru but this was all the elk spotting I did. I wandered onto someone's homemade tree stand monday, looks like its been there a while and in need of a little repair.Lots of sign in the area with numerous trails , scrapes and rubs.
I cant wait untill the bucks are a little more active with late october coming.Has anybody hunted up around hemlock ,I always pass by the sign thinking I might try looking at this area one year? How about the blaine area I havent gone up there for a few years now - is anybody up there doing any good ?
Good Luck

Re: Hunting Reports week 10/11 - 10/17
I went back to Eastern WA for the opener. It was pretty slow. Not many birds in the air or anywhere for that matter. My partner did get his first White-Front so that made it a good trip for him. The dogs did great and we were able to get a few quail in the afternoon. Still better than yardwork and honey do's.
