Azul Oinker,

the lower C was good. Very good for this early in the season. I attribute 80 % of that on good conditions and 20% stupid birds. if they are still alive, there aint many stupid ones left.

Go forth and kill the cute little birdies.

Shoot some ugly ones too.

Mark and the patiently waiting dog.

got a limit off of the west side of Sauvies Island. from what i hear though, lots of people didn't do that well. i just got lucky i guess.

Flatfish is right about the stupid birds though...it didn't take long after the shooting started for those little buggers to start acting shy. thank god for rain and some decent winds.

i hunted steelman #9. steelman #2 got a limit as well (#2 is boat only access) Seal Lake was a bust..some of the guys out there never pulled the trigger. also, it is my understanding that Mud Lake didn't do all that great either. good, but not great.

water was good. the recent rain helped out a lot. it is still a little low. i was about 5-8 yards from the waters edge, but i was able to arrange my dekes so i could get the birds to make their final pass right over the point i was sitting on. that made for some easy, sub-15 yard shots.

Like Flatfish said, the lower C was the best opener I have had in the 6 years I've hunted it. It also was one of the darkest openers from the weather, it was really hard to see birds till about 15 minutes after shooting time. Shot a box of shells in that 15 minutes with only 2 birds in the boat. After that it was easy limits of greenheads. Happiness is a warm barrel.

Had # 2 pick at Umatilla NWR on the opener. Shot blind # 30 but the birds just weren't there in the numbers I anticipated. We shot 6 birds. We did have a couple of flocks of teal we passed on and had some drive-bys because we were wanting mallards or landing in your face shots. The birds just didn't decoy very well. Had to take some tough shots to get what we got. Today we hunted the river and ended up with 5 Widgeon. Only had 1 flock come in of about 25 birds. Dumped the 5, end of story. Glad to hear others did better at L&C.

well it was limits on Sat and Sun. Mostly big birds too. Saturday was a quick one by the time I got back to my blind my partner was one bird away from his limit. I was out looking for a lost hunting partner who took a wrong turn somewhere I guess. Missed the opening 30 minutes of shooting light that was a hard one.
Over all a great day and a great kick off to a season.

Great to hear Dan! I cannot wait to come to the island and see your dogs and get the chance to be taught about the lower columbia. If you have some spare time this week I would love to come visit you and see you dogs and you in action training them. Hopefully you are still in contact with my friend Bill about picking up one of your dogs. The talk I was told about sounds like he has turned around his ideas of what he is looking for in a dog to train. Hope everything is going well for you (seems the hunting is going great) and it keeps up! Talk to you soon

Sauvie Island was the pits today. my brother-in-law and i were hunting on Mud Lake and shot the only two birds we saw. 2 widgeon, 1 for each of us.. we checked out around noon and there were less than 20 birds checked out for the whole day up to that point. only 4 blinds were still out and they probably didn't do much better than we did.

Moss, what blind? I was on ML 5 and got one greenhead out of a flock of 10 or so. They were kind of hid behind overhanging branches and so I only got one...good excuse anyway...but those were the only birds in my range all day. Left at 9:00 to go to work.

Considering we have never had any water this early on our property in the Gaston area I was pleased to have downed a couple of GreenHeads in just an hour and a half Sun. AM.

Should have taken a Teal or two but got gready with working Mallards. Never shot again. My fault.

Sorry about getting back to ya so late...my Grandfather went out to Seal today and got just one bird. He said it was still rather slow over most of the West side and very few birds were flying.
