Default Subsistence hunters score!!!

There is nothing quite like going to deer camp, and watching hunters roll in with elk (5 bulls,1 calf) in one piece. I wonder why the deer or so spooked? These were subsistence hunters, I believe from Idaho. They also managed to leave the meat hanging unbagged, and uncovered, for the yellowjackets to enjoy in the 70 degree heat. Aaaah the heritage. I stopped the ODFW person in the area, and asked him if he was going to pursue the new "proof-of-sex," rules with these folks. Oh no, they don't have to abide by any of the ODFW rules. I checked my birth certificate when I got home, and just what I expected, I was born in america thus making me native to this country, but I guesss I don't get any special privelages. I guess it just upsets me that they are up obviously road-hunting elk during a controlled deer season. The game wardens should be on those guys like glue, instead of harrassing the paying hunters who aren't committing any crime. If I was a Chesnimus elk hunter I would be even more P.O'd.

By "subsistence hunters" you wouldn't be referring to Native Americans here are you? They're the natural stewards of the land and wouldn't waste fish and game meat

I say kick them (I have a big chunk of indian in me too) off of the welfare plantation and treat them like every other citizen.

Hey Keta...have you been following the latest efforts to give the Klamath Indians back 650,000 acres of the Winema & Fremont NF (bought & paid for once or twice already)?

Several years ago the OSP was working with the
Nez Pierce tribe when a situation like this arose(I don't know if they are still doing this).

I think the state of WA bought the land that the Tacoma Narrows bridge is on two or three times.

To discuss elk herd management and ignore the "subsitence hunters" would be like studying Columbia River salmon and ignoring the gill nets stretched accross it.

The last few days of bow season I was into bugling bulls pretty good. Didn't kill one, but lots of very close encounters, and that's why I bow hunt. I have a memory of a screamin' hot 6X6 at 30 yds that I'll always remember. With a rifle I could've killed a truck and trailer load.

While fueling in Pendleton, I noticed quite few camo clad "native" brothers with rifles in their rigs.

While I was leaving the woods, I saw a "native" brother setting up his camp trailer in the area I'd been hunting.

I bet the elk killing, especially for big bulls was great the week between archery and deer rifle.

That is NOT subsistance hunting. I've talked to some Umatillas that have killed monster bulls in what we have to regard as a "Spike Only" unit in the name of "Subsistance". They admitted trophy hunting the big bulls during the rut with rifles.

I heard that(and saw pics of)Washington has planted tracking devices in the stomach of some big bulls on their side of the Blues to study what kills the big boys. It'll be interesting.

Last year in Chesinimus unit all I heard about was the 'subsistence' hunters and the amazing number of animals they shoot out of there. "Truckloads" was a word I heard a number of times.

Its sad its come to this but go ahead and toss me in the non PC crowd but this whole "subsistence" deal is pretty outdated isnt it?

my use of the term subsistence is more sarcastic than factual. It just seems to be such a farce. To see them leaving elk hanging unbagged in the 75% heat was appalling. The yellow jackets were just thick up there. I sent letters to Senators Smith and Wyden today regarding the subject. my biggest contention was that things change. We have all had to make changes, as society has evolved. My party only gets to hunt our area every two years, the bear/cougar initiative has cost this area many animals due to predators. Bow hunters even have limited entry to the chesnimus unit where we hunt. Every group has had to react to changing conditions, except the native americans. Those treaties were signed years ago, but it is time to re-visist them.
