2" worms in Steelie meat??
We caught some summers that were still pretty bright today and when we got them cooked we could pull out these spagetti-like worms that were about 2" long. They were right next to where the spine would have been in the fillets. Anybody know about these guys?? They didn't look that scary but I have never seen them or maybe I just never noticed em.

the largest tape worm comes from fish and yes it grows in humans i cant remember the scientific name. 35 ft long is the record. Halybutts and lings have worms too just cook it long enough and you are fine.

I have never seen them in steelhead and to be honest don't think I would have much of an appetite for one that did! lol. Would you pet a dog that didn't have any hair on it? lol?

Re: 2" worms in Steelie meat??
I would recommend not eating the fish. I know someone who ate some trout that had similar worms and gained a bunch of new friends...

Re: 2" worms in Steelie meat??
I have seen this in bottom fish over the years, & have found that the longer I wait to clean my fish the more the worms show up in the meat. They seem to come from the intestines & mirgate into the meat fairly fast after death.

yeeeeeeeeeeeeuck!
I'll never forget ordering halibut with my cousin one time, and she did not believe me about halibut worms.
We asked the chef, and he took us into the kitchen and showed us. Sure enough, she didn't eat her dinner!!!

Re: 2" worms in Steelie meat??
When vacationing in Prince Edward Island (Atlantic Canada) I saw many shops hawking cod fillets. Before you carried them out these fillets went on a light board...you could see the outline of the worms in the flesh and they would be picked out.
I know the locals caught the same fish and didnt use light boards! Like one post said, its just a matter of cooking it thouroughly. I dont think I would smoke a fish like that, probably doenst get the temp high enuff.

Re: 2" worms in Steelie meat??
Once told a man that offered me a piece of his smoked salmon: "I like salmon better than bottom fish because salmon doesn't have worms in it."
He laughed his head off.
He told me to hand him the salmon which I did and in less than 10 seconds he found a parasite.
He then told me that he was a meat inspector. He said that all fish have parasites. He said that actually if a person was concerned about it, that it is much easier to find the worms in the bottom fish because of the white opaque flesh, that can be held up to a light and then removed.
He then asked if I ate beef. I replied, Yes. He said that beef has 10 times the parasites as fish. He then asked if I ate pork. I replied, Yes. He said that pork has 10 times the parasites as beef or 100 times that as fish.
So, we just cook and eat and don't mention it to anyone in the family.
Happy eating,

Re: 2" worms in Steelie meat??
I agree that fish have less parasites than beef and pork, because they grow up in the wild, while our livestock just sit in enclosures and rot. One thing I have tried to cut out of my diet though is pork

Re: 2" worms in Steelie meat??
One rule of thumb is to always freeze your salmon before cooking. Freezing kills most of the parasites while cooking kills all of them. If you eat sushi be sure to check if the fish was frozen before consumption.
