Looking for good Lab pup
Hi all:
I'm looking to add a Lab pup to the den right after the Holidays. I have a 9 year old female who is starting to slow down and its time for her replacement (sad but true :depressed: ).
Doing the count down backwards there may be some good labs that will be born in late November or early December, then 7 weeks and my house will not be the same
I'm looking for another female, good hunting line, would prefer a dog that comes from a hunting family and not a high-power field trial line or kennel (been there, no more).
Just starting to look...I know some good litters go fast. Good luck to everybody for waterfowl tomorrow...can't wait to see some birds work the decoys

Re: Looking for good Lab pup
I would like to toss my hat in the ring here too. My ol' gal just turned 11, and for her age is still going strong! Every extra day I give thanks.
Looking for a female chocolate, and again no trial lines; just a good family hunting dog.

Re: Looking for good Lab pup
I know you said no kennel or field trial but.....
I would start by calling Doug Shade at Minoggie Kennels on Sauvie Island. The dogs that have come from Quincy are great hunting dogs and companions.

Re: Looking for good Lab pup
I have a 6 mo. old started balck male lab - the offspring of a pair that I own. Sire is from a high powered field trial line (Ebonstar Lean Mac Grandson). Dam is from Oregon Retrievers. These dogs are awsome field and family dogs. I've got 4 kids - so the dogs get back what, if anything, they dish out. Actually, they're great with the kids and great travel companions. The pup is pretty mellow - for a pup - but eager to work.
I hunt both my adults - male for upland, female for waterfowl - for various reasons, that's the way it's worked out.
My pair will also be throwing another litter next cycle - provided it doesn't take her out of commission for waterfowling.
I have references from people who bought pups from my last litter. Send me PM if interested.

Re: Looking for good Lab pup
I would recommend Coyote Creek Retrievers in Eugene and specifically a pup from Annie (Coyote Creeks Pattie Anne's Annie). My older lab (4yrs) is from her and Quincy from Sauvie Island. Athletic- yes, hunting machine-yes, great marker and retriever- yes, family dog-wonderful...gentle, easy going, fireplace dog, great traveler..I could go on and on....Anyways, I am very happy with her and she is one of the most striking females I have seen (blocky head, big chest but ribby).....She is from trial lines but those two dogs in particular have wonderful puppies. You can email me if you have any questions.

Re: Looking for good Lab pup
Almost forgot....I hunt her on upland and waterfowl...pheasants, quail, chukar, ducks, geese. Great flusher (35% of the birds she flushed last year she circled around and flushed towards me! Apparently, she was taking my shooting handicap into account! ) Also, if birds holds she has a natural pointing instinct! I know, I know, she's a lab but its pretty cool to see a 80lb dog lock up with every muscle quivering until you give her the o.k. to "get the birds."

Re: Looking for good Lab pup
hey Deschutes2:
Your dog sound great! Proud Papa for sure. I had a lab that tended to point too...that is really fun to hunt behind I emailed Coyote and they have a litter on the ground now but I just don't want a new pup during the hunting season and Holidays.
Thanks for the good word though and good luck hunting this year.

Re: Looking for good Lab pup
I would really recommend a pup from Annie preferably with Quincy. We just got back from Summer Lake (yesterday) and for the first hunt of the year she made some remarkable retrieves, God knows that it was none of my doing....she was a little upset with us until our shooting smoothed out...she marked 3 snows guys about 500 yards down the canal knocked down and wanted to hunt with them for the rest of the day! Did I mention she is pretty forgiving?

Re: Looking for good Lab pup
My dog, Bernice, is from a Quincy litter and she is amazing. She turned 1 on Oct. 12. Calm and minds well around my infant daughter (except for gratuitous licks to the head) and in the house. She's also an absolute ground covering machine while pheasant hunting this year. We worked in CRP all spring and summer. She "gets it", and she got it just by walking around the fields. We'll see how things go in the duck blind. She is a retrieving machine. She marks her dummies well, and she doesn't break (well, not that much anyway).
My hunting buddy also has a Quincy dog named Rizzo, she's three years old. On opening morning she made a 300 yard retrieve on a running cripple (the bird ended up #4 in the long tail feather contest here in town).
Bernice is the best dog I've ever owned, and I'm convinced it's all about her breeding. After watching Bernice and Rizzo work, another friend of our's got on his cell phone during lunch to see if doug had any Quincy puups "in the oven". Call Doug Shade at Minoggie Kennels.

Re: Looking for good Lab pup
Boy, that reminds me of Coyote Creek Patty Anne, a super neat dog, pretty hot stuff in her day a decade ago. I hunt with a buddy who's got a daughter.
Doug's got good stuff. I have two friends that have Quincy x Indy pups about 1 1/2 yrs old. Some great talent.
Great places to find pups.

Re: Looking for good Lab pup
Every one has their favorite kennels, probably because they have got a dog or had a dog from there, like I like sunnyview kennels, my dad has had 5 labs from sunnyview, one was "sunnyview's lucan legacy" which was a grandson of san joaquin honcho, I am on my second sunnyview lab. A lot of kennels have sunnyview blood lines in their dogs. Its just another kennel for you to look into if you go that route.

Re: Looking for good Lab pup
In reality I look at the breeding, it's the dog, not the kennel. Some of the best breedings do not come from professional breeders but the dog enthusiasts who are breeding for themselves, not profit. Same lines...less money.
I've had two Sunnyview dogs, one with Honcho blood.

Re: Looking for good Lab pup
I'm still doing my research and talking to some breeders. I'm having some good conversations with some people and agree with Tilla, "its the dog". I love talking to dog enthusiasts who are breeding for themselves, not profit. I like when the money helps but is not the driving force.
I'll post pictures when I finally get her in the next 2 months or so. Thanks for keeping the post going on this.

Re: Looking for good Lab pup
I hope to have a litter available at the end of the first week in February. The Sire is Buddy from Deep Run Retrievers, in Goldvein VA and is co-owned by the President of NAHRA. The dam is my own trained and extensively hunted dog Hannah. Both have certified hips and good eyes. The last litter between these two produced choc, ylw and blk pups. I kept one out of the litter and sold him as a started dog at 10mos. He was a jumper from the start and was making great leaping water entries when I sold him. Trained easy and handled well. Have numbers of past pup owners for you to call. Pups will run $500, have all standard vet care by that time and have had daily human contact from day one and will be retrieving and coming to the whistle when its time to go.

Re: Looking for good Lab pup
I'd also recommend a breeding from Pattie Annes lineage. Had the chance to see her run in some trials, NAHRA Hunt Trials, not full blown AKC field trials which are a lot more demanding. She was a super sweet dog in her prime. Another kennel you at least might want to call is Parkdale Kennels in Rainier and talk to Butch Higgins. He is one of the best trainers in this area and knows how to talk DOG. I've seen him send some six month old pups on long retrieves that I couldn't have handled with a GPS. Tell him what you want and if he doesn't have it he'll point you in the right direction.

Re: Looking for good Lab pup
Hey S.S.,
My blf is the grand daughter of Pattie Anne. I had the opportunity to see her in person, (not just in the ad at the back of Gun Dog Magazine). It was 2 years ago and she was at the ripe old age of 13. They had her out near their whelping shed with the new pups. My dog is from Annie (Pattie Anne's daughter)who was a spitting image of her. What a great lineage. Annie is probably 6-7 yoa now and I wonder every day if they've kept another to keep that great line going.
