Default ATTENTION - NATL FORST LAND CLOSED TO SHROOM TAKE

Ya might want to read this article published yesterday in the Register-Guard. It's getting to the point where a guy can't do anything anymore...........

Break out the maps and be on private or BLM land if your going to pick shrooms.

Wonder how you prove you got them on other land if there is some sort of check point or enforcement? I know where we go is a patch work of National Forest, Private and BLM land.

Honest Judge, I was lost in the forest for Five days and all I had was some Onions and Butter. I looked around and all I could find were these Yellow Mushrooms.

I read the article. I think all it means is Commercial pickers are out of luck......

That really makes me feel bad.

It appears the question is only about COMMERCIAL activities for which the USFS issues special-use permits. All commercial actitivities on the National Forests require a special use permit -- even something like running a boat shuttle service and using USFS roads.

Non-commercial users are not affected at all - pick away, chanterelle ON!

Hobbyist mushroom hunters also are affected by the change. The Forest Service won't issue personal use permits or allow casual collection on the affected forests.

Here is the info I just copied from the Mushroom Harvest regs (minus commercial permits) in the Tillamook area forest, SIUSILAW NATIONAL FOREST WEBSITE, regarding incidental take (personal use) of edible mushrooms.

Incidental Use
No permit or fee is required. Hikers, campers and other people visiting this Forest may collect up to one gallon of mushrooms per person per day. Up to 6 of these mushrooms may be matsutake. All matsutake mushrooms collected under incidental use must have at least ½ inch of the stem cut off immediately after picking.

Mushrooms gathered under incidental harvest are for personal use only. Selling or exchanging mushrooms gathered incidentally is a violation of Federal Regulations (Title 36 CFR 261.6F), punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 or imprisonment for not more than 6 months, or both.

Here's what Mt. Hood website has to say:

Personal Use Mushrooms
The Personal Use Mushroom permits are self-issuing and available at our Forest District offices and online. Make sure you read and sign this permit and have it in your possession when gathering mushrooms on the Mt. Hood National Forest.

Christmas Tree Cutting
Permits go on sale Forest Wide the Monday before Thanksgiving Day, check at each district for open areas. The permit allows you to cut one tree up to 12 feet tall.

But it may be that these websites haven't been updated yet. Y'know, lack of $$ and all... Then again, we'd like to think that the newspapers are always 100% accurate, but...

I sure would err on the side of caution and make a phone call first.

That's amazing. Especially for a person like me who never eats mushrooms!

I put out some feelers on this with some contacts with the Oregon Mycological Society. I will let you know what I found out if it is pertinent.
The thing to note is ech national forest runs its permits system differently. I tried to get a permit in the Willamette National Ferest over a year ago to pick mushrooms ..it is the least user friendly of several.

You need to have a permit IF you want to sell them and make a profit. You DO NOT need a permit for 'personal use' meaning you can't sell them and only get a gallon container for each person. It appears that article only applies to commercial pickers who are selling.

It's getting closer, the "anti's" have almost won. You know, the folks that are anti-everything?

If personal use harvest is not covered in this lawsuit, don't fret, it soon will be! For most of these people, their sole goal is to keep all of us out of National Forest land, period. I would imagine we'll see fishing and hunting next, there's already been lawsuits over the years concerning hunting and fishing in wilderness areas and the impact it has there.

Just like the Tillamook 50-50 BS. It's just a starting point for them.

It's a good thing there are a lot of people in the Mountains around where I pick or I could be in Big Trouble.

I asked a Cop one time about digging plants up and taking them home from the Forest. His reply was to me.

"We have much higher priorities then arresting people for Stealing ferns "

Trying to keep things in perspective

Son. goes out and picks them when he needs money for fishing things, so now he is out of that extra funds. Sometimes when work was slow, he would make $50 and up a day and that would help him pay his insurance etc. Now he is screwed.

Look for the price of shrooms to go up and they probably be imported from the highlands of Borneo at a high price.
