Re: Best Cow Elk Call?
All of the cow elk calls can be effective. here is my rundown:
Cheapest: simple mouth diaphram - Made by multiple different manufacturers, the primos one with the little plastic "hood" over the latex is easier for beginners to use. all diaphrams are harder to use at first, but easy once you learn them, they wear out after one season, but they can be used with No Hands and they make great sound if you blow em right. I always have one of these avalable. You can use them to stop a fleeing elk even while at full draw. You can even bugle with them.
Most expensive - but easiest: Hoochie Mama Cow elk call - again by primos. this is a push type call that even your brother in law can use correctly. they're easy to use, great sound, adjustable, but they are spendy ($20) and they require a free hand to use.
My favorite for versatility - the Hyper Lip single by Primos. this is a small external mouth call that is blown kindof like a duck call. the call is excellent and very versitile. You can do estreous calls or mews, or whatever on them. You can't bugle on them however. It requires a free hand to use. They are moderately priced ($12?) and will last a few years with moderate use. Carlton calls makes a similar call to this (i dont remember what they call it but it is a small green external mouth call) but it is easier to screw up the call when using the carlton version. It requires biting the mouthpiece and if you don't apply the perfect pressure, you can screw it up good. Primos also makes a Hyper Lip Double. It is the same as the Hyper Lip single just a little louder.
hope this helps.
