Re: Bomb found in Wilson River
It’s a very effective way to kill fish. Out of necessity, I have done it myself in at least one Southeast Asian country. I certainly hope they can catch the people who did this on the Wilson. I suspect the culprits were waiting on a good rain and some fall salmon.

Re: Bomb found in Wilson River
That is a pretty popular hole--I am glad that it was removed without incident. Also, I agree with Stew here--I really doubt many (if any) fresh fish are up that high. Then again, poachers are not often what one would call intelligent, by any means.
With this kind of sabotage plus last year's Sandy sabotage (the spikes that were anchored on rocks to tear up boats and rafts (and people)), it is a wonder that nobody has been seriously hurt or killed.
Hopefully, this will keep the honest people more wary of shifty characters.

Re: Bomb found in Wilson River
My dad and I did dive counts on the Wilson for the ODFW a few years ago and found a pipe bomb in one of the hole up river that year too.
People see all the Springers summering over up there and figure they will try to TNT thing. Its too sad.

Re: Bomb found in Wilson River
Wouldn't it be sweet justice if some snagger went to that hole, "flossed" the item to the bank, and I guess everyone can figure out the rest of this story if the item turned out not to be a dud after all. Hopefuuly, there wouldn't be any innocent bystanders near by went it went off. I guess we could hope for early detonaton by the perpetrator as well.

Re: Bomb found in Wilson River
What ever the reason it is a sad day. I was fishing in that area last week. Why do people feel necessary to go to these measures? I love to eatfish as well as the next guy but thats not the way to do it.

Re: Bomb found in Wilson River
Granted, it can be mighty frustrating to see all those non-biters dodging your bait.
Seriously, that news is sad but not surprising. Someone told me that a bunch of years ago someone put a net in there and cleaned out the hole; one day, 15 or so steelhead, the next day... nothing. :depressed:

Re: Bomb found in Wilson River
Poachers are really not that intelligent at all... back at home, TNT was a popular way to fish (no law enforcement). But it is very ineffective becasue most of the fish sink to the bottom of the river/lake due to their intestins being destroyed by the shockwave (you know how gutted fish sink...thats what happens).
So the "bombers" blow up the TNT and wait in the rapid bellow for the floaters, but they only get about less than 10% of the dead fish... the rest rots on the bottom
Needless to say the fishing back at home was not very hot for a few years. A friend of mine went home this summer and said everything has changed now. Law enforcement is back and there are no more gill nets, no more bombs, etc... The fish have rebounded and things are getting better.
Idiot and poacher should be synonimus
