Default Rifle Cleaning

Was wondering what diferent brands of cleaniing solvent.s you use. powder solvent,s ---- Copper solvent,s
I have always used hoppe's #9 and shooters choice for copper removal. Just tried a sample of Barne's copper and lead solvent it workers faster than shooters choice.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">For serious copper removal Barnes CR-10 or Sweets 762 are probably the leading products. The Otters electrode thing works as well, or so I've been told but no experience there. Some people like to soak the bore in kroil before the start with a copper solvent, it can decrease the elbow grease necessary. Kroil is a penetrating oil that can get under some fouling making easier to remove.

Everyday cleaning Shooter's Choice is very good and as you've noted it does have a mild copper solvent included. Butche's Bore Shine is another product. Both of these can be left in the bore for extended periods of time.

Shooter's Choice is by no means a gun oil. I think the best product on the market for rust prohibition is Eezox it also includes a powder solvent, but the film it leaves behind is very good.

I like to use a degreasor or bore scrubbing product between Shooter's Choice and Eezox. Break cleaner works very good for that or Beachwood Casey Bore Scrubber.

I recently bought a .243 winchester which shoots great, but had a lot of copper fouling in the barrel. I tried to clean it out with shooters choice, but even when leaving it in the bore for an extended amount of time, and scrubbing the bore with a brush, it didn't remove all of the copper. Last weekend I picked up a bottle of Sweets 7.62 and followed the directions and had all of the copper out in about 30 minutes!! I mean all of it!! Patches were coming out clean. Then I used J-B bore cleaning compound to get out anything else that may be in there, plus it mildly polishes the bore to minimize copper fouling in the future (supposedly). I haven't shot it yet to test this, but I'm totally satisfied with the Sweets 7.62 solvent.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Any barrel even hand lapped custom barrels will get copper deposits. There is a thread later in Ihunt about cleaning and barrel break in, can't remember what it is called. The best way to break in a barrel and eliminate or significantly reduce copper fouling is to follow a simple 10 shot rule.

Shot one round down your new barrel and clean it with Sweets till the patches come out white. Repeate 10 times. Usually after the first three shots the copper build up is already greatly reduced, but do all 10. After that point start shooting groups of 5 shots and cleaning as necessary. This is straight from Kenny Jarret known for his $5,000 Bean Field rifles.

You'll find copper collection is greatly diminished. If you've already got copper fouling remove it with Sweets, and do the 10 shot drill.

Try Kleen Bore products. I used to think my guns were clean until I tried this complete product line. Not cheap, but well worth the price.
