Default Yaquina

Fished the Yaquina for about 6 hours today, came home with one 20# chinook. We saw 2 other fish caught and released, other than that it was pretty slow.

Saw the similar thing Saturday... we fished between the two upper ramps and nada.. saw fish rolling though. Saw a couple caught, and heard the power lines was the place to be for a short bite. Only a few boats did any good from what I could see.

We fished around 31 on the lower river on Sat. Lots of boats but I only saw a couple of fish caught. Moved up above the power lines and caught a 20lb on bobber and eggs in the afternoon. Tried again Sunday around the power lines at low tide. Lots of boats, really too many for that stretch of the river. No luck. I was the only one using bobber and eggs. I got chewed out by a gal who felt I was hogging the river. Lots of reasons to get frustrated. Can't catch fish, too many people etc.

I fished Sunday from Riverbend up through the 47 marker without a strike in about 3 hours. I talked with a friend who put one nook in the boat right at daylight. I only saw the net come out once. The pressure was pretty heavy down low too.

I am pretty sure that all the fish rolling are coho. They are pretty thick in the lower bay but don't seem to be biting. Remember, this year you can keep the coho in the Yaquina, but only if they are fin clipped. In the last month, we have brought 7 to the boat, but all were fully finned.

Crabbing was OK, but not red hot. I got my dozen, which fed us, plus 2 neighbors. I also managed to jig up over 3 dozen small and medium size herring while the pots soaked.

I was also there visiting my folks on Sunday and didn't see much action. I also spoke with the ODFW fish checker that was there and she said: "it is the slowest it has been in a few years" :depressed:. Also, unfortunately my girlfriend and I were out crabbing with our relatively new traps and are pretty sure we lost one to some no-good crab trap thieves. I checked and double checked all knots and had more than enough line out, and came to the conclusion that there are some dirty rotten crab trap scoundrels out there in Yaquina Bay. I am sorry to go off on this but this is low.

Fishinduck...Sorry about the trap. The scum bags are out there. A friend & I had our traps raided there last year. Next time we're going to set up a "spotter" and watch them do it, then 'em (Turn 'em in to OSP!!!)

Scumbags...If you read this.....We're gunna get ya!

BTW Thanks for the report all....I think I'll keep chasin' Deer for a couple more weeks.

 It was me!! it was me!! Me and my best friend Seaweed and the Bullwhip Kelp brothers just can't resist unattended pots!!! They loves the ones with long lines (more to grab onto), I Love the ones that aren't very heavy (easy to take out to sea)!!

I've lost about $200 worth of gear there one day right before my very eyes and it didn't have anthing to do with that ever elusive "crab trap thief". Every year people come on here and complain about crab trap theives in almost any estuary. It's really simple, if you're going to crabfish either stay on your gear so you can pick them up when the buoys start to go under (or when said unseen undesireables come by) or accept the INHERENT risk that you may lose them when you leave them unattended.

I don't accept the INHERENT risk when I leave the pots unattended. I also don't think that the reason my pot had empty beer cans in it was because of seaweed and my long ropes. I will catch these lower life forms that feel it is acceptable to pull pots not belonging to them. No flame intended here, I just get a little ticked when I can't soak the pots while fishing. I think it would be fun to pull up to the low lifes with a few paint ball guns in my boat.

fishinduck,

Give me a description of your floats and where you had them soaking. I will be fishing and crabbing both Friday and Saturday of this week. I will watch for them when I go. I know it is a long shot, but maybe the current or seals got them. I will take a look. If located, I will pull and hold them for you here at my house in So. Beach.

Yes let me know what the floats looked like and if they had any writing or names on them. I will be out in the bay tomorrow morning for one of my classes.

I fished the Yaquina today way up by elk city, lots of boats and few fish. I got one about ten pounds and saw one other. Other than that I heard of nothing.
