Default Alsea River getting better

Son in law just called and sent this pic of a bright hen he caught this morning upriver. Fish is 41 inches long just under 38 lbs. Broke his rod on the second run, had to hold togeather and reel this hen in. I wish I could have been there to watch. I could have been a real help to him, laughing at him and encouraging the fish to woop him.

Update for photo.
This is # 4 this week. One to black, released to finish her job.

Look at the back ground, you think he was at a park. Nope, his back yard overlooking the Waldport bay.

So if any one is wondering if the fish are in the Alsea the answer is yes. He reported rain this morning and cleared this afternoon.

If you meant to post the picture that your son-in-law sent you, it didn't work. If it was a link try posting it as an URL. Or download the picture into your gallery and then post it.

Sounds like a nice fish.

Appears the system won't let me upload any pics tonight. Will keep working on it.

Thanks for the report, It's been years since I've fished rivers for fall Chinook, but since I didn't get any Salmon this year in the ocean, I think I'll give it a try.

How's the crabbing down there? anywhere to crab without a boat? I'm going on a guided bobber trip this weekend out of Waldport and was wondering if I should drop my rings the night before and try for some crabs...should i??

Crabbing must be getting better. lots of floats in the mouth and lots of people crabbing. I will be there this week-end, will get some info and post. Hopefully I will catch a fish on the new reel I just got. A Quantum Plasmz PLM 40. Replacing an old reel on the lama-glass rod when I get to son's house Friday night.
Called last night, he got another chromer around 16 lbs. Told me he has twenty five lbs of bright red meat filets for me to bring home to smoke.

Sublime,
There used to be a bar on the bay at Waldport, with a boardwalk that I thru crabpots from, went back in, downed a brew, and checked the pots. I remember catching a meal or two of crabs. This was twenty years ago. Anyone know of this establishment (name) and if it still exists?

The crabbing has been good, most are hard and getting fuller. During the week is better, less competition. The crabbing off the dock can be good but at night it can be interesting with all the other crustaceans that only come out at night. I would not leave my pots out at the dock overnight unattended. Good luck on the fish.

Please use extreme caution when crabbing/fishing/boating West of the bridge on the Alsea. Especially around the mouth of the bay, we lost two people to the bar on an ebb earlier this year. I've seen quite a few boaters venture out the tips, I'm not sure what they were doing other than risking their lives. Boat with a friend, wear a lifejacket, check your equipment (anchors, radios, flares, engine). Have a plan. Be Safe. R

We watch the boats fishing outside the bar area from my Daughter's porch in Waldport. Always thought that was taking a risk. Appears to be deeper water just inside the surf line before the river enters in the ocean and shollows up.
Not worth the chance of being hit by an unexpected wave from the ocean.
Be careful guys.

Bloodnboat has the right name...Its the Salty Dawg and yes the calimari is pretty good.

I did some crabbing off the publis dock during spring break, weather was poor and the pressure was heavy so the crabbing was slow. I hear its a good place though just watch out for the seals.
