Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
I see the first Oregon rifle deer hunting fatality happened at 8 am Saturday morning. That is about an hour after it got light on opening morning. I am sure it will not be the last one this season. I seem to hear about 3 or 4 every year.
For those that went hunting this opening weekend, who wore orange? I know I dont own any hunter orange and until I am forced to wear it I probably wont. Same with life jackets, until I feel I am in danger or am forced I probably wont be wearing one.

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
I killed a little buck at 7:05 opening morning. I was the only person in a remote area for miles and I was wearing orange. I wear the break-up camo orange and have never felt that the orange affected how the animals reacted. I came from states (Pennsylvania and Wisconsin) where orange is mandatory. You even had to have your licence pinned to you in a pouch so it was visible.

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
I too wear break-up camo orange even if I think I'm the only guy for miles. I thought that was the case, for instance, this weekend only to crest a ridge and see someone on the next hill. Later that day, I had a situation where I had several deer run between my partner and I. Asking him not to shoot me on the radio, he admitted he saw my orange. We were about 600 yards apart, deer in the middle. Not too long for a kill shot (300 to the deer) and close enough that his 270 partitions would have put a hurting on me. You make the call. I'm not even going to weigh in on whether it should be mandatory.

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
I'm responsible for myself and I was taught that orange is a must. This is like the seatbelt and still people continue to not wear them and die. Life vests are the same. What is more important life or a little deer meat, fish meat. I will wear orange for as long as I hunt. There are too many people that dont have the patience to wait to see if it has horns. I would vote for a mandatory orange during rifle season, it saves lives.

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
I asked the second question, if you thought orange reduced the number of accidental shootings. On the surface it seems like a silly question to many.
Is there any merit to the thought that if somebody is wearing Orange, they are more visible and somebody will scope them? If I am across a ridge and some doughball pulls up and sees me, they usually want to take a closer look at me. So if they dont have binoculars, out comes the gun and I get a gun pointed at me so they can look thru their scope. A very dangerous situtation to be in if you are the one being looked at. If they cant see me, they wont scope me. Hence Camo helps me stay hid.
I am sure the stats skewed or not by who ever calculated them, will tell me Orange saves lives.
If somebody is going to shoot at something before they determine what they are looking at, maybe orange helps them identify what they are looking at. Maybe they are going to shoot no matter what
I do think anybody that looks at me thru their rifle scope, should be determined as attempting to take my life, and I should be able to shoot them. I have no idea if the gun has a shell in the barrel or not, but I was taught to treat guns as if they do, so I can only assume somebody is trying to shoot me when they point a gun at me.

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
Wearing hunters orange will make you more visible in the woods. I choose not to wear orange, my choice. I would rather not be seen, my choice. I also didn't wear a motorcycle helmet and until my latest truck, never wore seatbelts, again, my choice. I donot have a death wish and do believe in a persons right to individuality. My choice.
I will not wear orange unless a law is passed stating that ALL hunters wear orange.

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
Personally, I think it is an obvious choice. Wear the orange. I believe that a person is MORE likely to get "scoped" without the orange. A hunter see movement, no orange, and pulls up on the "deer" walking across the next ridge. Oops! It's a hunter without his orange on. I'd bet this would be even worse with some of the "grayer" camo colors out there. With orange, that same hunter would've known from the get-go that it was not a deer, but a hunter. I do agree, with this BOE comment though "I do think anybody that looks at me thru their rifle scope, should be determined as attempting to take my life, and I should be able to shoot them." Though, maybe a little harsh, I see your point.

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
I always wear orange, even if im just walking around in the woods during a hunting season. You are more visable, and any way you look at it, its just a good idea. My opinion, is why not? It doesnt affect your hunting. (many studies have been done I will find some respecatble sources if anyone would like) I take alot of risks in my life, do alot of stuff that I could injur myself doing, but why not just take away a portion of the risk? for me..personally of course, I dont really see not wearing orange as a choice, Its just sorta a mandatory thing for me.

No brainer. Wear the orange. Those who don't are promoting natural selection. Darwin would understand.

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
Never used to wear Orange until a friend hunting with me admitted that he was going to take a shot at an animal until he saw me in the distance. I now wear it all the time when a season is open.
I think there are only two western states left that don't require it aren't there?

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
I always wear hunter orange, how can I expect my kids to wear it if I don't. Years ago when I used to hunt the coast range and not wear color I'd regularly get scopes put on me. When I started wearing color it didn't happen (or maybe I just didn't see it!). If someone sees hunter orange they know what it is, no need to scope it. By the way, why don't these clowns buy some binoculars?

I wear orange. Everything I harvest wears orange as I carry it out. I also tie a couple red LED flashers onto it for the carry out.

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
Iam with you B O E, iam a camo man myself but i have adopted a new way of doing things. Number one i dont like the unnatural color of bright orange but i also beleave it is a life saver. Now days i have some bright orange velcro strips about six inches wide that i can attach to my cap/hat and also to my upper sleeves. I wear it when iam walking but remove same when i want to hunker down. So far it seems to work ok and i have the best of both worlds. I got the orange strips at Walmart and they are actually made for your hat but can be adapted to many places. Its a case of having your cake and eating it to. I think especially when packing horns the orange should be attached. No, i dont wear my life preserver either and i suppose some day i might pay for it the hard way. Just sign me "know better but bullheaded".

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
This will be the first year that I will wear it. I have worn it occasionally when i was a kid with my dad but this year I will wear it always. I think I didn't wear it cause I didn't think it looked cool. But now I have finaly realized that I am not cool and should stop trying.
Having a kid changes things and you don't take as many dumb chances. I drive less aggressive and wear my seatbelt more than I used to. Used to only wear it when my wife was with me nagging. Now I wear it if I am going faster than 45.
Going to hunt around Portland for the first time this year and I guess there are a lot more hunters per sq mile than in So. Oregon.

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
Oh and I am willing to confess that I used to be one of those idiots who uses his scope to see what is across the way even though I knew it was another hunter.
But I gave that up a few years ago. Need to buy a spotting scope though.

Yep, I'm in the orange camp. Both my wife and I wear it while rifle hunting. Same with bird hunting. I want to know where others are, and I want them to know where I am.

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
blaze orange or ten mile cloth are the only colors that are not natural to the forest. by wearing them you let other hunters know that you are a person.
a soft non reflective cloth that does not make noise is the ticket. you can make more noise and be noticed more by game with a shiny nylon jacket than a wool or other type garment.
i also wear the orange, don't like the scoped feeling.

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
When I first started hunting, I always wore orange. But when I started working for a sporting goods retailer I got hooked on camo, and every year I bought more. The only time I've since wore orange is when I've gone to Colorado, which mandates it. But so far as oregon goes, I probably wont wear orange again, except on bird hunts in a party.

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
I wore mine. I have been on a hillside while somebody was poking at a buck just over the ridge line. The buck was with in 100 yards of me, and the shooting was coming from 500-600 yards, so I was getting a direct report, and could hear the bullets sizzling in. It was several shots before they nailed the buck, and I wasn't sure if they saw me or not...until I loaded up and went over to CHAT.
It ended up that I knew the guy :depressed: I can't say I would've taken that shot or not, most likely not.

I wear the orange but would rather not have to. I'd rather blend in with the background but there are too many idiots out there that shoot at sounds.

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
Roy - sorry to say it, but I don't feel sorry for you one bit for getting scoped when you choose not to wear orange. If you do have orange on and get scoped - that's another story and I agree with you.
When I see movement and don't see any hunter orange I will lift my binocs to see what it is. A lot of guys don't use binocs and use their scope. I think your chances of getting scoped are much less with orange, but I could very well be wrong - there's too many idiots out there carrying rifles. Just like guys who drown on the ebbing bar without their life vest, I have very little sympathy anymore for hunters who get scoped or shot at when they don't have orange on. When you know the risk is out there, be smart enough to do something about it. WEAR ORANGE!
Oh - and it's an added bonus if you are a Beaver - you can add an OSU patch and wear the orange to the football games too!

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
Yep, I wear orange, prefer the camo pattern to help break up my outline. I was watching a clearing this weekend when someone walked into it about 400 yards away. they had orange on and watching thru my binocs I thought they were scoping me with their gun. Tough to figure out what to do, If you move, they may get excited, if you hold still your not helping yourself... I got up and walked directly toward them making myself as visible as possible. I had a few words for the people when I got to them. They insisted that they weren't looking at me, but at something else. Either way they were using their gun to look. BUY SOME BINOCULARS! DO NOT USE A GUN TO "LOOK AROUND".
I am not a fan of people who don't carry binocs when hunting, because they invariably use their scope to "check something out".

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
You are fooling your self if you think camo , will help you not get shot, buy not being seen.
Read my posts on the " How you shoot a person " thread. I personally would not wear camo . in a rifle season. EVER. It only works if you are completely motionless and at close range. id.painter

Re: Did you wear hunter orange this weekend
I am green/ red color blind.
One in three men are color blind to some extent.
Red gives me the most trouble personally. Dark green and brown are the same to me. Purple and blue are the same.
I can see hunter orange very well.
For those of you wearing plaid red and black mackinaw cruiser style jackets, heed this warning. I CANNOT SEE THEM! You are not safe in one. Wear an orange cap and a vest at a minimum.
About 3 or 4 years ago, I pointed a rifle at a deer. Just as I began to press the trigger, a loud BANG came from the direction I was aiming in. A man and woman, both in red/black plaid, were shooting at the same animal I was. Had I shot about 2 seconds earlier, I promise a bullet would have been flying near them.
Now the deer had just started to turn as they shot. They did not point a gun at me. But I sure pointed a loaded, saftey off, ready to fire rifle at them.
Buy some orange people. The deer don't care about it. Your widow might.
I have talked to a lot of color blind men( never met a color bind woman). I have never heard about not being able to see orange. Red on the other hand, is common.
Red/Green are the most common colors men have trouble with.
Mark and the orange and black for Ductober dog.

Don't wear orange but should. I try to get back far from the roads and traveled areas when I hunt.
A rifle scope should never be used as a spotting scope.
