Strugeon week
well it has been a fun week, Sturgeon season reopened in the lower Columbia on Oct. 1, my best friend, who got me started sturgeon fishing flew in from Florida for the opening and of course my birthday,
Saturday we hit the river in the boat, launched out of the fishery and chased down 25 or so shakers and lost 2 really nice fish.
Thursday came around and we all headed up to Bonneville to test the bank poles out, we got a 42.5 and 44, nice sturgeon dinner when we got back home.
Friday after I got done with some Dad things we headed up to bank fishing again. late start we got there at 1pm and the gates close at 5pm
we had no luck at all.
today we headed up to Bonneville at O'dark thirty and waited in line for the gates to open. once again the speed traps where set and anyone breaking the 20MPH speed limit was told to leave and not come back for 24hours. We started out at the big rock and that was Combat fishing with about 45 poles getting into one another, so we went down to power lines and people on both sides of us where catching fish but....... we still where not having much luck, so we moved back up by the parking lot and by now it getting to be 2:30 pm and with the exception of a couple shakers in the morning we where still fish less and people around us where catching and then, bam my pole goes off and a feisty 41 comes to shore, oh i tell you the disappointment, get ready and this time I have Kenny throw me out more upstream and my weight sticks, 2 Min's later my pole goes off and after a fine feisty and fun fight a 51 incher comes up for me. We get the poles out and 5 Min's later Kenny hooks into a fat 45, relieved we did not get skunked and that we limited out we headed home for beer and the hot tub.
we mainly used sand shrimp to catch keepers off the bank
boat i always use my smelt.
