Pretty day, the Sandy was a bit swift in the canyon but really nice in the flats. Not much action. Heard of a good bite in one area at daybreak but that was it. I turned one fish up high and lost one down low, which I guess was good considering I was only out for 3 hrs and only saw one other angler with a fish.

I know there are fish in that river, but they seem a bit hard to come by, I've only got two so far this year from the Sandy, certainly a bit slow. I took a trip up to Marmot Wednesday night and hit all my favorite spots for about 3 hours, not a single hook-up. The river was a bit high, but I've caught fish when it was higher, so I don't think that is the problem. I saw a few other anglers, they wern't having any better luck than I was. Oh well, I do better in February anyway.

Would it be reasonable to expect that there will be only wild fish as high as Marmot, so it is all catch and release?

Yes, it is almost excluslivly a catch and release for steelhead. Great place to use those barbeless hooks, or at least pinch down the barb. I did manage a hatchery summer fish up there last May, but that was the first hatchery steelhead I caught that high in about 3 years.
