Default How to avoid having to track an animal.(pics)

I was going through some older pics, and came up with these so I thought I'd share them

I won't go into the story (unless I'm really pressured), but this is from a 4x4 muley I got a couple years ago. All I can really say is, I actually meant to spine him. I won't go so far as to say I'd intended to spine him this well...After I got him home and butchered, I decided to investigate the damage.

Pretty gnarly eh?

Verrrrry graphic, but what do you think the outcome would have been if the arrow had hit an inch in either direction? My suspicion is that the force of the impact would have broken him down anyway.

What were the particulars: distance, arrow weight, make of broadhead, bow poundage, etc?

I watched a deer go down with a similar hit one time, and I was amazed. A rifle couldn't have put him down any quicker.

MY, cool pics!

The buck I shot this year went down in his tracks, as did the one last year and a couple before that. Strange. This year's was on such a steep incline that I tipped the lungs and clipped the spine and down he went.

The first time I got one like that the broadhead was stuck in the bone and I cleaned it and boiled it. Now it sits on my mantle and gets weird looks from people that come over.

I've never dropped an elk in its tracks but I've heard it happens on occasion.

An inch or so either way shouldn't have mattered much Skein. The buck had been mostly facing me when it stepped into an impression in the ground (actually a dug out bed). I'd just ranged the rock next to him and it was exactly 32 yards. He was no more than two yards this side of that rock. You could actually see the tops of both shoulder blades jutting up, and there was a good 5-6 inches between them. An inch either way would have gotten lung, but my shooting was pretty dead on that year. I go nuts if I'm not slapping arrows in a 2" circle at 40 yards w/broadheads.

I you want graphic, I'll PM you a picture of a coyote I got that year. Can you say s k e w e r ?

BTW, I was shooting a Mathews Q2XL at 70 lbs. Thunderhead 100s, arrows right around 400 gr.
My arrow speed with that setup is typically right at 290 fps.
