late archery hunt for cow elk in wilson unit?
This hunt takes place at the end of november and is a controlled hunt. My ? is has anyone done this hunt before with any sucess. I will more than likely be hunting by myself as I have nobody to go with so Im looking for some pointers here. I know of a few areas to try but I dont know if they will have any gates open or not. There should be plenty of animals down low that time of year I would think. Thanks for your help. Sturgeon1. ou can e-mail me some info if you want, even maybe some good spots to check out. Good huntn to all.

I used to hunt that steep mother and had pretty good success finding the critters, the hard part was getting close enough. The best success I had was the heading up the road that runs along the Miami river and hiking the ridge tops glassing for animals. At that time of year you can spot them miles away. Good luck.

Yeah the miami is where I hunt. matter of fact that is where I got my cow this year.
just follow the miami river forest road at daylight and you will find them. try fire break 3 or top over to the nehalem which will bring you out at cook creek. good luck this year.

That can be a tough hunt since it's right after rifle season. The elk are usually very spooky, but the weather should help. A few years ago I hunted that same hunt up above the kilches. I watched a cow feeding in a cut near a main logging road while I was eating lunch. Every time she would hear a truck, she would lay down behind a log and hide. It was really amazing how many hunters drove by her. I tried stalking her using the passing log trucks for cover, but was out classed . PM me closer to season and I can give you some ideas near the NF Nehalem, opps I mean the NF zipperlip .

Another good hunt can be the gods Valley area. take the road off of Hwy 53 just a few miles north of nehalem. It's real close to the miami river road they're talking 'bout, just another area to check out. The benefit of gods valley is that there are lots of closed roads up in that area that you can walk. There won't be much pressure after rifle season and there are plenty of elk in the area.

Sturgeon1, a buddy and I also drew that tag. We haven't figured out where we are going yet either, though I have some leads. Wanna pool resources a little?

Over the past 12 years I've tried this hunt about 4 times, kind of an ugly hunt (wet, cold and so-on). Don't overlook the confluence of the Salmonberry & Nehalem river area. I've only taken one animal up there, but I've seen critters every time I've gone. Especially in the Buick canyon area.

I did this hunt a couple of times in the past. I got into elk, but never tagged one. Mostly hunted along the Wilson River. Try the Jones Creek area or upriver by the hiking trail. Pray for snow. That makes for a fun hunt!
