Default Be safe

With the deer rifle opener this weekend, I though it was a good idea to bring up the saftey issue. I took my son through hunters safety last year and it was a good refresher for me. Every year someone gets killed while hunting in the NW. Odds are someone will also get lost. So bring out the saftey tips. Here a couple off the top of my head.

Hunter orange is cool, a vest and hat combo is the best.

There is no such thing as a unloaded gun.

Unload that gun before getting into a vehical. A hole in your truck floor is embarresing, a hole in your partner is even worse.

Be 100% sure of your target, 99% sure is not enough.

Know your backstop, make sure it isn't a house or road.

Minimum survival gear I always carry

water proof matches
fire starter
space blanket
thin plastic tarp
parachute cord
water

It's suprising how little room it takes up when vaccum packed.

Norm,
You beat me to it, I logged on the hunting page to do this exact thing and here it was.

A couple new survival items for methis year will be:

cell phone (I found out on a scouting trip that I had service up high in the unit I hunt)

bee sting kit (thanks to that thread that was posted)

And ABSOLUTELY wear your hunter orange, would hate to loose anyone from our intenet family to an accident this year.

Good/Safe hunting to all............

Great advice, her are a couple more...

1. Your scope is not a pair of binoculars, don't use it as such.

2. Bring surveyors tape and if you get a buck, put the tape on the antlers while packing it out.

3. Get out of your rig and into the woods. You will see more game.

4. Set aside one day to take a kid with you. Don't plan on hunting much, just teach them about being in the woods. (tracking, glassing, gun safety, map reading skills, etc.)

Good luck, have fun and be safe.

Oh and take lots of picture for us to see!

I have helped pack a dead guy (shot by his partner) off the hill on opening day before. :depressed: :depressed: :depressed: :depressed:

Nothing I ever want to do again, be safe out there.

Here's one that people sometimes give me funny looks over but I usually have one in my pack...A kotex pad.

Sharp knives and broadheads arent too forgiving and those things work great and are easy to keep in your pack.

Didnt hear that from me, though.

Might I add:

1. Tell someone where you will be going.
2. Communicate with your hunting partners.
3. Ask permission to hunt private property.
4. If youpack it in, pack it out
5. Remember - it is illegal to have a loaded rifle while on an ATV -"No Person Shall - operate a snowmobile or ATV while carrying a loaded firearm...." (ODFW Big Game Regs 2003 pg.12)

All very good tips!

Plastic blaze orange vests are availible for one dollar around town. I buy a couple extra. Then wrap them over the antlers and head in hopes to make me more visible when carrying out.

This year I am bringing the red LED flasher off my bike to strap on the antlers as a little bid extra.

And another one:

Don't leave your rig without those survival necessities mentioned above - even if you're just gonna go "right up there." They won't do you any good on the front seat of your truck.

I call it my "possibles bag" like the old mountain men used to do. It's so easy to get a couple hundred yards from the rig, cut some tracks or spot an animal, and suddenly find yourself a long way from where you thought you would be. Think dark and cold and alone.

Nitrobass ok I will bite I have to be the First one to laugh at the Kotex in your pack. But you have a point them things would be a benefit if you sliced your self up. But just think of the looks you will get in full camouflage on the way to the hunt in Safeway buying Kotex. haha or the jokes at deer camp. But thanks for the tip i might have to start to carry one with me.

So, it looks like it happened once again...

Hunter Shoots, Kills Friend

Men Weren't Wearing Orange Safety Gear

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- A man shot and killed his friend while deer hunting over the weekend, according to the Lane County sheriff's office.
Details were few, but authorities say Jason Matthew Roe was shot Saturday on a 33-acre piece of private property behind his residence.

Neither Roe, 29, nor his friend were wearing orange safety vests or hats, according the sheriff's office.

Remember to wear your orange vest...

Ryan,

Just ask any EMT about sanitary napkins - most carry them for the same reasons that Nitro does. Your buddies won't laugh at you when you're using one to stop them from bleeding to death, guaranteed!

PS: Mello-Yellow, that was terrible  .

My old elementry principle is a huge gun guy, remember the 21 year old that acedently shot his 15 year old brother, that was his sons, thats why all this aplies on the range to expecialy the one about being sure of your target
