Sportsman's Meat Cutting - Update w/Warning
Well after a successful antelope hunt in August, my partner and I dropped our bucks off at sportsmans in Carver. I had to leave the Country for business and my partner had some pressing family issues come up soooooo neither of us thought twice about not hearing about the meat. Last week we began to call on a daily basis to try and reach Sportsman and drove over there. No one was around
Today I get a call from the OSP. No one has seen the guy in 4 weeks and he up and left all the animals and cleaned out everthing else. I was told there were 75 plus animals hanging. Oh yea, he turned the power off so all the meat is spoiled.
I waited 8 years to kill an antelope and now I do not even get to taste it. Really burns me. Now I have to go there, sign a release form so OSP can dispose of the rotten meat, just what I wanted to do.
9/3/03- Just got done with the OSP, there were 75 plus animals, not 40. The owner of the shop did not pass away, or leave the state he is still around. He called the OSP yesterday and wanted to talk but was afraid to go in because he is concerned that they will arrest him, imagine that. I am so ****ed about this.
Spoiled Meat In Carver
DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMALS TO THIS GUY IF HE OPENS BACK UP.

Re: Sportsman's Meat Cutting - Update w/Warning
WOW! I've taken my Elk and Deer to them for over 10 years and have always received amazing service. He even vacuum packed my smelt for me every year in really good commercial bags in February for virtually nothing.
Thanks for the notice and sorry about your antelope - that would really suck!
You know, the more I think about it, the madder I get - you invested a lot of time, energy and money into getting that antelope. If that guy ever shows up, he owes you big time. You might check to see if he had insurance and present a claim to them for the value of your antelope (at $49 a pound ) and your hunting expenses.
Oh yeah - one more thing - I think if you are going to blast a business on here (as you should) you are supposed to attach your entire name to your post.

I'm sorry to hear about your lose. It reminded me about a custom rifle I was having made when I lived on the east coast. The guy just packed up and disappeared leaving all his customer's products only half finished. It was a legal mess trying to get our properties back.

Re: Sportsman's Meat Cutting - Update w/Warning
Had a meat cutting shop pull the same crap here in Kelso a few years back.Seemed he lost his license to cut beef but game dosen't have to be inspected,so he stayed in business just processing wild game, then one day just flaked out and left a locker full of elk to rot.A hazmat team had to come in and clean all the rotting meat out of there. But I recall some sort of problem trying to establish a value for the hunters loss and it couldn't be done.I think ya may be screwed.Don't know if I can mention the shop name here but you might look into how thier law suit turned out. They were located on west main in Kelso,Wa.

Re: Sportsman's Meat Cutting - Update w/Warning
So that multiplies out to 40 separate violations of wildlife laws regarding wasting game animals, right?
Sorry to hear about your loss. Someone please find this guy and string him up by....
Well, he better have a damned good reason...

Re: Sportsman's Meat Cutting - Update w/Warning
Sorry to hear about the lost meat. I used to cut meat in my younger days and still remember enough to cut my own. There is a guy in Forest Grove that has a small shop off of HWY 47 near Hagg lake. I have used his cooler and grinder several times. I shot a moose the last day of a hunt a few years ago and brought it back in quarters. I had him cut if for me because of time constraints. He did a great job at a resonable rate. I know were he lives but can't remember his name or number. If some knows who I'm talking about please post this guys name number. Good game processors are hard to find.

Re: Sportsman's Meat Cutting - Update w/Warning
This guy should definitely go to jail - for a long time. Unfortunately an A misdemeanor only has a maximum fine of 1 year in jail and $5,000. There's got to be a felony charge - I'd think that a felony theft charge would apply due to the value of the meat - he destroyed someone else's property. I don't care what his excuse for leaving was. He should have contacted folks so they could get their meat - even if it was still hanging. What a horrible loss - 60 animals die just to end up wasted. I'm still fuming about this and I didn't even have my meat there!

Norm is talking about gambles meat cutting. I have used them in the past, but my partner was taking his to Sportsman since it was by his house. I figured it would be easier for him to just pick up both. I should of gone back to gambles.

Re: Sportsman's Meat Cutting - Update w/Warning
If I may, I would suggest Shy Anne Meats in Oregon City. I have tried three other processing companies in East Co., including Spotsman's - they have all screwed up my animals and/or orders. I am extremely picky about game care and processing - to the point that I started processing my own. However, if I am short on time, I've taken animals to Shy Anne and have never been disappointed.
Last year, I took deer in (somewhere other than Sportsmans) for sumer sausage - it took 3 months to get it back and they didn't even apologize! They said the their sausage is so good that they have a huge backlog and that's the way it is! Sportsman's allowed one entire deer to sour, not keeping their cooler cold enough.
Shy Anne might cost a little more, but you can be assured that they will take care of your meat.

Anyone have the number to gambles? I can't seem to find it in the phone book or I would post it. It's about two miles south of Forest Grove on 47 behind a farm.

Wapiti, I'd like to hear about your issue because I used JM's for a pig one time and was well satisfied. I think I'll use Gambles as well now as there seems to be a concensus on them. Does anyone know if he gets pretty backed up or do they move things through pretty quickly?

Re: Sportsman's Meat Cutting - Update w/Warning
I am only going to say that the 3 times I used JACOBSMUHLEN's for my deer meat, they made a very good product. I can't say they are fast by any means, but I still think they make some of the best pepperoni around. I have nothing bad to say about them.
It amazes me through all of my friends and this thread how so many people have had some sort of incident with a meat processor one time or another. A buddy of mine took one to court several years back for letting meat go bad. He won by the way.

6wapiti6,
Thanks for the PM, I'll remember your words of advise before I decide where to go.
I to have used Shy Ann meats in the past and have been very happy with what I got. What I was looking for this year was somewhere that would process my meat and not somewhere that pools the meat.
Also, here's the article about Sportsman's from the KATU web site.

That's tough about Sportsman's...they were working with the Food Bank, too, to supply donated venison...I'll try to chase it down when I get back from camp (home today for wedding..sigh).
I've used both Shy Anne's and The Butcher Block on Hilltop in Oregon City...Good service from both...

Re: Sportsman's Meat Cutting - Update w/Warning
It really sucks that this happened. You work so hard to get you trophy and then something like this has to be the further thing you could amgine could happen. I hope they throw the book at him.
I have used Frontier custom meat cutting in Carlton for my hogs for the last 8 years and for grinding my elk burger. Dan just built a new plant a couple of years ago he runs a clean shop. His prices are about the same as I have seen other places.
I used JACOBSMUHLEN's once and only once won't be going back to take the abuse again.

Re: Sportsman's Meat Cutting - Update w/Warning
I would try Willamina meats service 503-876-2516
I took my elk in there this year and they had it all cut up and ready for me in 3 days. they charge .49 per pound and a 20.00 disposal fee on elk, deer they charge a flat fee of 60.00 and a 15.00 disposal fee. They do a great job on all of the animals, just remember to call ahead of time.
Good luck to all this year

Re: Sportsman's Meat Cutting - Update w/Warning
Well since were recommending buthcer shops now I want to tell you about one I don't want any of you to ever take your stuff there
I don't want you take your stuff there cause it will slow down getting my own stuff back.
Honest best place I've seen so far is Otto's Sausage Kitchen on 43rd and Woodstock. They do not freeze you meat and cut it with a band saw, they bone out all animals. They vacum pack everything if you want them too - I always do! Advise you check all packages before you leave for good seals. The sausage is top rate. You get your meat and nobody else's. The jerkey is WOW great, the pepperoni is fab. They will cut your steaks the way you like them and they are quick even at the peak of the season.
I learned about them from a festidious hunting partner - Man I'm not kidding here friends.
Hay don't want to try them out blind - no problem. Stop by during lunch someday and have a Brat or a Dog on the sidewalk - Be prepared to have more than one.
I think this is a multi generation family business. Gerry (might be Jerry) runs the place now - great guy

Owner of the meat market has been found and arrested on un-related charges.
I would imagine more charges are pending.

Just a thought. I've heard of folks getting replacement tags for diseased animals they've harvested. Might be worth a call to ODFW for those affected by this issue....

Hey Stickfish,
Thanks for the recomemdation. Do you know if Otto's will process waterfowl? I know some of these places stay away from fowl do to shot ruining knives in grinders. I am now out a place since Sportsmans has done mine the past couple years.
