Default I finally took the "short reed" plunge...

After much trepidation on my part, I finally decided I was going to buy and learn how to work a short reed call. I picked up a Saunder's Reload and Dave Smith's Breakthrough II CD. I have heard a lot of good things about Saunder's calls and the Reload was easier for wallet to handle.(read: wife said yes )

I had been blowing a flute for the last 5 years and it took me about 15 minutes to get my first decent honk out of it.(My problem, not Dave's technique i'm sure ) It still takes a couple of tries when I first pick it up, but as I get used to it I am sure that won't be an issue.

I am looking forward to working my way through the rest of the CD and cleaning up the pitch. If any of you guys have any other tips, feel free to share.

I bought the video "Honker Talk" with Shawn Stahl and it's a great how-to video. He gets right to the point and walks you through the sounds and how to make them - step by step.

I got a Tim Grounds Half-Breed call. My wife likes it best when I turn it around and practice the fffffftttttt ffffffttttt sounds.

She's gonna be pretty surprised when I step outside some morning and FILL THE YARD UP WITH GEESE! Then she'll be sorry she made fun of me.

The Grounds Half Breed is the best goose call I've used for hunting...

Its so nice not having a big flute call or 2 hanging from your neck. I definitely dont miss those days.

So do you sound like a goose or a chicken. As soon as you get the air flow part figured out it all comes pretty easy after that. At least the basic stuff. Spit notes and the rest.....

One more to the fold, those poor geese are running out of options. Like the rest have said, practice practice practice. My oldest son and I run the wife out of the house on a regular basis. She finaly came on one of our early season hunts so now she see's the need. Dave CD and Shawn Honker talk video and the geese will be breaking your door down. Good luck
